China to crackdown on trademarks following "iPad" issue | TUAW ...

Trademarks in China are a notoriously shady business, but according to Reuters, that's something the country is trying to change. Chinese authorities will begin reviewing trademark laws in hopes to prevent so-called "malicious" registrations, or attempts to glean money from established brands.

Apple recently had to deal with a similar issue in the country relating to the iPad name and eventually paid a whopping $60 million to Proview. Cupertino levied a lawsuit against the company for rights to the name, but a Chinese court rejected the claim based on the fact that Proview had owned the iPad name in China since 2000. After Apple's legal attack fell short, Proview went on the offensive and eventually scored the $60 million judgement which allowed Apple to openly sell the iPad in the country.

Apple's iPad issues don't exactly fall under the umbrella of "malicious" registrations, given that Proview owned the name well in advance of Apple's tablet hitting the market, but it's a plus that China will begin keeping a closer eye on the trademark scene as a whole.

PFT: Tebow reportedly asked out of Wildcat

Smith hauls in a long catch against Webster during the first half of their NFL football game in Baltimore, MarylandReuters

We know who all six AFC playoff teams are, and we have a pretty good idea of their playoff order. Week 17 isn?t meaningless in the AFC ? home-field advantage is still up for grabs ? but it won?t feature any dramatic changes in the way the AFC playoffs look.

The NFC is another matter. Nine teams remain alive for the six playoff spots, and although the Falcons have already clinched home-field advantage, everything else is jumbled.

Below we provide the state of the playoff race, through Week 16:

AFC

1. Texans (12-3): Houston clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Colts, or if both the Broncos and the Patriots lose.

2. Broncos (12-3): Denver clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Chiefs and a Texans loss to the Colts. The Broncos will be the No. 2 seed and have a first-round playoff bye with if they beat the Chiefs and the Texans beat the Colts.

3. Patriots (11-4): New England clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Dolphins, plus both the Texans and the Broncos losing. New England can also earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win over the Dolphins and either the Texans or the Broncos losing.

4. Ravens (10-5): Baltimore has clinched the AFC North and cannot get a first-round playoff bye. The Ravens will be the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs unless they beat the Bengals and the Patriots lose to the Dolphins, in which case the Ravens would be the No. 3 and the Patriots would be the No. 4.

5. Colts (10-5): Indianapolis will definitely be the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs regardless of what happens next week. The Colts will most likely play at Baltimore in the wild card round.

6. Bengals (9-6): Cincinnati will definitely be the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs regardless of what happens next week. The Bengals will most likely play at New England in the wild card round.

NFC

1. Falcons (13-2): Atlanta has clinched home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

2. 49ers (10-3-1): San Francisco earns the No. 2 seed with two more wins.

3. Packers (11-4): Green Bay earns the No. 2 seed with a win over the Vikings in Week 17 and one San Francisco loss. Otherwise, Green Bay will be the No. 3 seed.

4. Redskins (9-6): The winner of the Week 17 Cowboys-Redskins game wins the NFC East and will be the No. 4 seed. If the Redskins lose to the Cowboys they can still be a wild card team if they end up in a three-way tie at 9-7 with the Seahawks and Vikings, Seahawks and Bears or Vikings and Bears.

5. Seahawks (9-5): Seattle needs one more win to clinch a playoff berth. Seattle would need to win out while San Francisco loses out to win the NFC West.

6. Vikings (9-6): Minnesota clinches a wild card with a Week 17 win over Green Bay. The Vikings also earn a wild card if the Giants, Cowboys and Bears all lose.

In the mix: The 8-7 Cowboys clinch the NFC East if they beat the Redskins in Week 17. The 9-6 Bears clinch a wild card if they beat the Lions and the Packers beat the Vikings in Week 17. The 8-7 Giants get a wild card if they beat the Eagles and the Vikings, Bears and Cowboys all lose.

ap obama 121214 wblog Obamas Wish Special Holiday Homecoming for Troops

Charles Dharapak/AP Photo

During the first holiday season with the U.S. military out of Iraq and winding down in Afghanistan, President Obama today wished a special homecoming for American troops in his weekly address.

?This weekend, parents are picking up their kids from college ?and making room for all that laundry they bring with them,? he said. ?Children are counting down the hours until the grandparents arrive, and uncles, aunts and cousins are all making their way to join the family and share in the holiday spirit.

?And this year,? he said, ?that?s especially true for some of our military families.?

The president and first lady Michelle Obama reflected on Americans reuniting with their loved ones, including those coming from abroad.

?After a decade of war, our heroes are coming home,? Obama said. ?And all across America, military families are reuniting.? So this week, let?s give thanks for our veterans and their families.? And let?s say a prayer for all our troops ? especially those in Afghanistan ? who are spending this holiday overseas, risking their lives to defend the freedoms we hold dear.?

PHOTOS: Military Heroes Return Home

Released after a tense week of ?fiscal cliff? negotiations, gun control discussions, and new staff appointments, the president made no mention of party politics in the video statement. Rather, he and the first lady asked for support for the Joining Forces program, which focuses on employment, charity and other opportunities for U.S. service members and their households.

?Our military families sacrifice so much on our behalf, and Barack and I believe that we should serve them as well as they serve this country,? the first lady said. ?That?s why Dr. Jill Biden and I started Joining Forces ? an effort to rally all Americans to honor and support our veterans and military families.?

President Obama reflected on the holiday season as it pertains to the Christian faith and volunteer efforts.

?Every year, we commit to love one another, to give of ourselves, to be our brother?s keeper, to be our sister?s keeper,? he said. ?But those ideas are not just part of our faith.? They?re part of all faiths.? And they unite us as Americans. ?

The two concluded by thanking national volunteers dedicated this season to those ?most in need,? including Americans picking up the pieces from Hurricane Sandy?and the grieving neighborhoods of? Newtown, Conn.

Computer networks, communication systems, and other IT infrastructures have caused severe environmental problems by consuming significant amounts of power, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and lead to pollution during the production and disposal. To reduce such environmental problems and create a sustainable environment, new energy models, algorithms, methodologies, platforms, tools and systems are pressing. Thus, green computing and communications solutions should be designed with more renewable energy, higher energy efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emission, and less harmful materials.

The 2013 IEEE International Conference on Green Computing and Communications (GreenCom 2013) will be an exciting international forum for scientists, engineers, and researchers to exchange their novel works regarding advancements in the state-of-art of green computing and communications, as well as to identify the emerging research topics and open issues for further researches. Lawmakers press for trade response to Bangladesh factory fire

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A dozen U.S. lawmakers pressed President Barack Obama's administration on Thursday to complete a long-running review that could lead to suspension of trade benefits for Bangladesh after a deadly factory blaze there last month.

"We are seriously concerned about the deterioration of working conditions and worker rights in Bangladesh," the congressional Democrats said in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

"The latest apparel industry fire, with over 100 workers killed, in the Tazreen garment factory is the latest in a series of events and practices constituting this decline," the lawmakers said.

A Bangladeshi panel investigating the November 24 fire at the Tazreen Fashion Factory that killed 112 workers concluded it was the result of both sabotage and negligence.

The tragedy put a spotlight on global retailers that source clothes from Bangladesh, where labor costs are as little as $37 a month for some workers. Human rights groups have called on big-brand firms to sign up a fire-safety program.

The largest U.S. labor organization, the AFL-CIO federation, has raised concerns for years about working conditions in Bangladesh and filed a petition in 2007 asking for a review of trade benefits for the country under the Generalized System of Preferences program, which waives U.S. import duties for poor countries on thousands of goods.

GSP rules require a country to demonstrate that it is "taking steps to afford internationally recognized human rights," the U.S. lawmakers said. "We believe it is vital that your office complete your assessment of Bangladesh's compliance with these requirements."

The first widespread snowstorm of the season plodded across the Midwest on Thursday, as whiteout conditions sent drivers sliding over slick roads and some travelers were forced to scramble for alternate ways to get to their holiday destinations.

The storm, which dumped a foot of?snow?in parts of Iowa and more than 19 inches in Wisconsin's state capital, was part of a system that began in the Rockies earlier in the week before trekking into the Midwest. It was expected to move across the Great Lakes overnight before moving into Canada.

The storm led airlines to cancel about 1,000 flights ahead of the Christmas holiday ? relatively few compared to past big storms, though the number was climbing.

Most of the canceled flights were at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway international airports. At O'Hare, many people were taking the cancellations in stride and the normally busy airport was much quieter than normal Thursday evening.

Aprielle Kugler said she was considering taking a bus to Des Moines on Friday morning to visit her boyfriend after she had two flights canceled out of O'Hare. Sitting on top of her luggage, the 18-year-old from Wisconsin said her mom shoveled more than a foot of?snow?out of the family's driveway that morning to drive her to Chicago for her flight.

"It's so ridiculous, it's funny now," Kugler said.

The storm made travel difficult from Kansas to Wisconsin, forcing road closures, including a 120-mile stretch of Interstate 35 from Ames, Iowa through Albert Lea, Minn. Iowa and Wisconsin activated National Guard troops to help rescue stranded drivers.

In Iowa, two people were killed and seven injured in a 25-vehicle pileup. Drivers were blinded by blowing snow?and didn't see vehicles that had slowed or stopped on Interstate 35 about 60 miles north of Des Moines, state police said. A chain reaction of crashes involving semitrailers and passenger cars closed down a section of the highway.

"It's time to listen to warnings and get off the road," said Iowa State Patrol Col. David Garrison.

Thomas Shubert, a clerk at a store in Gretna near Omaha, Neb., said his brother drove him to work in his truck, but some of his neighbors weren't so fortunate.

"I saw some people in my neighborhood trying to get out. They made it a few feet, and that was about it," Shubert said.

Along with Thursday's fatal accident in Iowa, the storm was blamed for traffic deaths in Nebraska, Kansas and Wisconsin. In southeastern Utah, a woman who tried to walk for help after her car became stuck in?snow?died Tuesday night.

On the southern edge of the storm system, tornadoes destroyed several homes in Arkansas and peeled the roofs from buildings, toppled trucks and blew down oak trees and limbs Alabama.

The heavy, wet?snow?made some unplowed streets in Des Moines nearly impossible to navigate in anything other than a four-wheel drive vehicle. Even streets that had been plowed were snow-packed and slippery.

In Chicago, commuters began Thursday with heavy fog and cold, driving rain. By early evening, high winds and sleet that was expected to turn to?snow?were making visibility difficult on roadways.

Airlines were waiving fees for customers impacted by the storm who wanted to change their flights. They were monitoring the storm throughout the night to determine if more cancellations would be necessary on Friday.

Silence, ringing of bells to honor Newtown victims

NEWTOWN, Conn./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Many Americans will remember the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre with a moment of silence on Friday, just before a powerful U.S. gun rights lobbying group plunges into the national debate over gun control.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy called for residents of his state to observe the moment at 9:30 a.m. EST (1430 GMT) to mark a week since a 20-year-old gunman killed his mother and then stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where he shot to death 20 children and six adults before killing himself.

Malloy's fellow governors in Maine, Illinois, Michigan and several other states called on residents to follow suit with a moment of silence and to ring bells to remember the dead. The National Cathedral in Washington plans to ring its bell 28 times as part of an interfaith memorial.

"We have the moral obligation to stand for and with the victims of gun violence and to work to end it," said Reverend Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, who called on Americans to pray "that we may have courage to act, so that the murderous violence done on Friday may never be repeated."

The company that operates the Nasdaq stock exchange said its operations would observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., although market will open trading at that time as usual.

The observances will be held not long before the National Rifle Association, the largest U.S. gun rights group and one with powerful ties to Washington politicians, begins a media campaign to become part of the gun control debate prompted by the stunning slaughter of 20 children, all 6 or 7 years old.

Laws restricting gun ownership are controversial in the United States, a nation with a strong culture of individual gun ownership. Hundreds of millions of weapons are in private hands.

About 11,100 Americans died in gun-related killings in 2011, not including suicides, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The NRA remained quiet for four days after the Newtown slaughter, citing "common decency." It released a short statement on Tuesday saying it was "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The group scheduled a news conference for 10:45 a.m. (1545 GMT) on Friday in Washington. NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre planned to appear on the NBC television talk show "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

Some U.S. lawmakers called for swift passage of an assault weapons ban.

Vice President Joe Biden convened a new White House task force on Thursday charged by President Barack Obama with finding ways to quell violence.

"We have to have a comprehensive way in which to respond to the mass murder of our children that we saw in Connecticut," Biden told the group, which included Attorney General Eric Holder, Thomas Nee, president of the National Association of Police Organizations, and other officials.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, used a military-style assault rifle and police said he carried hundreds of bullets in high-capacity magazines, as well as two handguns. The weapons were legally purchased and registered to his mother, Nancy, his first victim.

By Thursday, funeral services had been held for more than half of the 27 people Lanza killed last week.

Newtown school officials said that Friday would be a shortened day for students heading into the Christmas break.

Reflecting a heightened state of alert at schools across the United States, a school district near Boise, Idaho, canceled planned assemblies at a number of its 50 schools after receiving a rash of threats that suggested "something bad" would happen on Friday, Meridian school spokesman Eric Exline said.

"The event last Friday in Connecticut has unnerved people in a lot of ways," he said.

The New Milford school district, near Newtown, canceled Friday classes "on the advice of the New Milford Police Department" but did not offer any further explanation.

In Florida, a 13-year-old student was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly posted a Facebook message threatening to "bring a gun to school tomorrow and shoot everyone," said the St. Lucie County Sheriff's office on Florida's east coast.

Police said the teen did not have any weapons and posed no threat to local schools. He was charged with making a written threat and is being held at a local Juvenile Detention Center.

Boeing tests the effect of WiFi on flights, substitutes potatoes for humans

Boeing has hauled in around 20,000 pounds of potatoes to use as human substitutes during its tests with airplane WiFi. The aircraft maker is checking that onboard wireless signals don't interfere with navigation and communication systems. Groaningly titled SPUDS (Synthetic Personnel Using Dielectric Substitution), the tubers apparently replicate how airborne signals are bounced and absorbed by real-life passengers, but without the need for Boeing to offer complimentary snacks or tiny drinks during testing.

Holiday Hockey at the Whale on Dec. 28 - Yale Bulldogs

December 28, 2012

STARS AT INGALLS BEFORE HOLY CROSS ROAD GAME

Related Links

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The Yale men's hockey team (7-3-2, 3-3-1 ECAC), coming off a 19-day break for exams and holiday, hosts the Red Stars, a Russian touring team, in a Dec. 28 exhibition before going on the road to face Holy Cross on Dec. 30. The exhibition game at Ingalls Rink airs live on yalebulldogs.com with a delayed airing on CPTV Sports. There is no broadcast of the Yale-Holy Cross game.
?
SERIES
This is the third straight year the Red Stars are in the Northeast playing a tour of college teams. Yale, winners of both games by a pair of goals, won the 2010 game, 5-3, and then outscored the Stars 6-4 in 2011. The Bulldogs are 5-0 against Holy Cross in a series played between 1947 and 2011.

THE LAST MEETING
Dec. 2011 vs. Red Stars: The Bulldogs dusted off the rust from a 22-day break between games to register a 6-4 exhibition victory over the Russian Red Stars at Ingalls Rink. Kenny Agostino scored twice while Brian O'Neill '12 had three assists and Andrew Miller handed out a pair. Yale, which used a different goalie each period, outshot the Red Stars 40-34 and never trailed. Both squads scored a pair of power-play goals. Jan. 2011 vs. Holy Cross: The Elis scored five in the first and four in the middle frame on the way to a 10-3 win over Holy Cross. Agostino had a career-high 3-2-5 while Broc Little '11 added 3-1-4 in the win at New Haven.

BULLDOGS
Yale last played on Dec. 11 in a 4-2 win over UMass at Ingalls Rink. Four different Elis scored and Kenny Agostino handed out two assists while Jeff Malcolm had 27 saves. ?

RED STARS
The Red Stars are an all-star team of 25 players, ages 17 to 21, from the 64-team "junior hockey league" called the MHL.? The league is the younger brother of the KHL, the "professional hockey league" in Russia. The MHL, with more than 2,000 players, is in its fourth year of existence and is the first junior hockey league that unites Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Hungary and Slovakia. The Red Stars will face Army before Yale and Brown after.

CRUSADERS
Holy Cross is 9-4-2 overall (6-3-2 in Atlantic Hockey) after sweeping Penn State in Worcester on Dec. 7-8.? The Crusaders, who have been off since then and don't play a game until the Bulldogs come to the New England Sports Center, have wins over Clarkson, Air Force and RIT. ?
CAPTAIN MILLER
Senior F Andrew Miller (116 gp, 29-98-127) is the 115th captain of Yale men's hockey. He has 5-7-12 this season and is closing in on his 100th career assist. Miller is among a select group of college players who have more points than career games played. He has been ranked among the top 10 in Division I for assists the last three years and was voted "best passer" by his teammates the last three years. His two goals against SLU on Nov. 10 this year were a career-high. Miller, a 2010-11 first-team All-ECAC pick, had 12-33-45 that season and was fourth in the nation in assists. More impressive was that 22 of his 33 assists were primary. The 33 helpers were second best at Yale and a sophomore school record. His best offensive weekend as a collegian came in Feb. 2011 when he hit the net three times vs. Colgate/Cornell. As a freshman, Miller (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), was 12th in the nation in points and registered the most (34) points by a Yale rookie in 25 years. The speedy forward was the 2008-09 USA Junior Player of the Year and 2007 Michigan High School Mr. Hockey.

LAGANIERE
Senior F Antoine Laganiere (Ile Cadieux, Que.), who is seventh in the nation with .67 goals per game, has 17 goals over his last 21 games, including a pair in the Dec. 2 win over Brown. He ranks 16th in Division I with 1.25 points while leading the team with eight goals and 15 points. One of the most improved Bulldogs last year, he had his best campaign with 19 goals and 33 points. Laganiere (97 gp, 39-32-71), featured in a recent hockeysfuture.com article, got hot when the Blue needed it most; he had nine goals over the final nine games, including his first collegiate hat trick in game three of the Princeton 2012 ECAC playoff series. He scored shorthanded, on the power play and even-strength against the Tigers. He also had Yale's best weekend with five goals over three games, which earned him his first ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honor.
?
AGOSTINO
Yale junior forward Kenny Agostino (Flanders, NJ), who beat No. 2 Denver with a power-play tally in OT on Nov. 23, ranks 16th with 1.25 points per game in Division I. He has been one of the hottest Bulldogs the last two seasons. Agostino, featured in a recent hockeysfuture.com article, was third with 14 goals and 34 points in 2011-12, while he earned ECAC Player of the Week honors for his three-goal, Feb. 17-18 weekend. Agostino (76 gp, 31-43-74) pulled off a rare feat last winter by scoring goals in consecutive games with under 35 seconds left in regulation, one for a win and another to send it to overtime. Agostino beat Dartmouth at Hanover with 34.8 ticks remaining, followed by a GTG against SLU with 34.2 left at home. His season-high was 2-2-4 against both UConn and Harvard at Ingalls in 2011-12. Agostino became the first Yale newcomer in 30 years to record five points in one game on Jan. 2, 2011. He notched three goals and two assists against Holy Cross and became the school's first freshman to tally five points in 27 years. Yale's rookie of the year in 2010-11, Agostino had 11 goals and 25 points and was the HCA National Rookie of the Month for January (8-4-12), the first Bulldog to receive that award. He was ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week on Jan. 23 (3 goals vs. Clarkson/SLU), becoming the only Bulldog to earn conference rookie honors in 2010-11. The former Delbarton School star had a goal and three assists before the holiday break, and 10 goals and 11 assists after. He ranked 11th nationally among rookies with .86 points per game.

BLUE LINE
There are seven defensemen on the Yale roster, including one senior, one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen. Senior Colin Dueck (Calgary, Alb.) has the most experience with junior Gus Young (Dedham, Mass.) a close second. Sophomore Tommy Fallen (Plymouth, Minn) was the team's rookie of the year in 2011-12, while classmate Matt Killian (Basking Ridge, NJ) has been in uniform for the last three games. Newcomers Rob O'Gara (Nesconset, NY), Ryan Obuchowski (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Mitch Witek (Downers Grove, Ill.) have seen plenty of action this year.?? ?
?

MALCOLM
Senior Jeff Malcolm (2.80, .903, 22-17-3) has the majority of action in the Yale net this year. He started the last three games, including a 33-save effort in a 2-2 OT tie with Union. Malcolm, who has nine starts this year, ranks 23rd in Division I with a .923 save percentage. His 32 saves in the 2-1 OT win at No. 2 Denver on Nov. 23 may have been his best as a Bulldog. Before that, Malcolm stopped 59 of 63 shots on Nov. 9-10 and did not give up a goal on 11 penalty kills. His 32 saves vs. SLU on Nov. 10 were a season-high. The Yale goalie with the most minutes and saves in 2011-12 was in net for two of the more memorable events of the season: he made 27 saves in the win over Princeton in the playoff series finale and notched a shutout streak of three (Colgate, RPI, Union) games and 226:39 minutes (parts of 5 games) in November. Malcolm (Lethbridge, Alb.) earned ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week honors after stopping all 72 shots in wins at No. 8 Union and RPI last winter. The three straight SHOs tied the school record but fell short of the Yale record (240:53 by Ryan Rondeau '11) scoreless streak. His career-high is 45 saves against Union on Nov. 12, 2011.
?
MARICIC
Senior Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) got his first start and victory in a 4-2, 25-save effort against Cornell in the fourth game of his freshman season. Since then he has compiled 751 saves and 14 wins. His latest win required nine saves (no goals allowed) over the last 29 minutes of the 6-5 win at Colorado College on Nov. 24. He also had some big ones down the stretch last year that helped the Blue go 3-0-1 to close the regular season. He stopped 66 of 70 shots the final weekend on the road. He saved 52 of 56 shots and held Dartmouth/Harvard scoreless on 10 of 11 advantages the week before. Maricic (3.00, .895, 14-10-4) had a career-high 40 saves in the 2-2 tie at Quinnipiac on Feb. 25, 2012. ?
?
FROSH
Six freshmen have been used in a game on many occasions this season, including three on defense and three at forward. The eight new Bulldogs come from five different states and one province, and bring experience from the USHL (3), EJHL (2), BCHL, AJHL and a New England prep school. They range in size from 5-foot-9 to a pair of 6-foot-4 skaters, while the average weight of the class of 2016 is just over 190 pounds. One of those big guys is Rob O'Gara, a Boston Bruins draft pick featured in a bostonbruins.com video this season.
?
RANKING OPPONENTS
The Elis won three straight games over ranked teams and are now 4-0-1 overall this season against teams with national rankings. Three (Harvard, Denver, Colorado College) of the four wins have come on the road. The other games were at home against St. Lawrence and Union (tie).
?
RANKING, POLLS
The Bulldogs are No. 7 in the uscho.com Pairwise Rankings and are 15th in that website's poll. The USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll had Yale No. 14 on Dec. 17.
?
SCORING CLASS
Yale has a team-high 14 goals from its senior class. The juniors are second with 11 tallies. The sophomores are third with eight while the newcomers have hit the net four times.
?
ON TV
In addition to the Jan. 18 Harvard game airing live on the NBC Sports Network, Yale games at Cornell (Jan. 25) and Quinnipiac (Feb. 22) are on the network formerly known as Versus.

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The weekend of March 22-23 marks the last time the ECAC Hockey Championship Weekend is held at Atlantic City. Next March, the conference championships are back in Lake Placid at the 1980 Rink, the site of ECAC Championships in the 1990s. Yale has won a pair of conference tournament titles - 2009 at Albany and 2011 at Atlantic City.

SCHEDULE
Yale has 15 games against opponents ranked in the latest uscho.com poll, including a January 4 date against No. 1 and defending national champion Boston College. Four opponents appeared in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and two (BC, Union) advanced to the Frozen Four.

GEOGRAPHIC BALANCE
The Yale roster includes players from 12 different states, two provinces and Norway. New York and New Jersey are represented by four players from each state, while Alberta and Michigan contribute three players and Illinois has a pair.
BEFORE YALE
The United States Hockey League contributed nine players to the Bulldog roster. There are three from the British Columbia Hockey League, two from the Eastern Junior Hockey League and one from the Atlantic Junior Hockey League.? Eleven Yale student-athletes came directly from prep schools.

Yale and Fairfield co-hosted three (2009, 2011, 2012) of the last four NCAA East Regional Tournaments at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. The Bulldogs competed in two (2009, 2011) of the three at the arena. The two schools announced in November that they have another in 2014.
?
INGALLS
Yale hockey celebrated the re-dedication of Ingalls Rink (3,500 capacity) on Jan. 16, 2010. The rink built in 1958 has been modernized while adding 13,000 square feet of operational space. The additions include locker rooms and space for strength & conditioning (including skating treadmill), student-athlete study area, medical & training, officials, video, coaches, equipment, reception and more. There are new historical displays, concession stands and bathrooms for the building nicknamed the "Whale" because of its humpback-shaped roof.
?
WHALE OF A TIME
The Whale (Ingalls Rink) has been a tough place for visitors in recent years. Yale, which enjoyed its first undefeated (15-0-1, only Division I team to do that) regular season at Ingalls in 2010-11, finished 10-7 last year. The Bulldogs are 53-18-4 over the last four-plus seasons at the Whale and 14-11-3 in home ECAC playoff games all time.
?

At my high school reunion last week, I ran into an old friend. He and I had a biology class together when we were young. He told me that summer activities were a wonderful activity for youngsters, and that the best activities were science summer camps. He said that his children had attended some that were very enriching to their knowledge of science. He said that they were well worth the money that they cost, and they could meet others there.

Nikon patents digital sensor back for oldschool 35mm cameras

Can't let go of that aging 35mm SLR accustomed to a strict film-only diet? Nikon seems to be toying with the idea of feeding its older models digits instead, judging by a Japanese patent application published last week. It was filed just last year and shows a digital back designed to be swapped out easily, complete with a screw adjustment to fine-tune the all-important focal distance. The patent was scoped by prolific Japanese blogger Egami, who pointed out that a different design would be required for each of Nikon's film SLR models, which all have different backs -- but an actual product coming to market seems quite a stretch anyway, at this point. Such devices are commonplace on medium format cameras though, and Leica even offered one for its R8 and R9 35mm SLR cameras as recently as 2007. Still, a pure digital version of our classic F2? Yes please.
