Straka resigns as Slavia Praha's coach

Prague, March 8 (CTK) - Frantisek Straka resigned as main coach of the Slavia Praha football team since the club's fans did not accept him because he used to coach and play for Slavia's traditional rival Sparta Praha in the past, he said yesterday.

Straka made angry fans of both clubs when he became Slavia's coach.

Straka's resignation is rather unexpected, however.

The club management nodded to his immediate resignation yesterday, Slavia's spokeswoman Sona Nouzakova told CTK.

Straka coached Slavia from last October. The team played ten first league matches under him. Slavia is currently in the 11th position among the 16 teams competing in the Czech first league.

Straka, 53, was connected with Sparta very strongly. He played for the team in the 1980s and coached it in 2004.

Shortly after he started coaching Slavia, unknown perpetrators sprayed his house in the countryside, accusing him of betraying Sparta.

Straka said yesterday he knows well how support from fans was important for both the club and its players. He said he did not want players and other members of the team to face the negative emotions anymore. These negative manifestations accompanied every Slavia's match and were directed only against me, he added.

It is not yet known who will be Slavia's new coach.

Syrian official defects to protest Assad crackdown

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's deputy oil minister announced his defection in an online video that emerged Thursday, making him the highest ranking official to abandon President Bashar Assad's regime since the country's uprising erupted a year ago.

The defection of Abdo Husameddine, who said he was joining the opposition because of the "brutal" crackdown on dissent that has claimed the lives of thousands of Syrians, came as the U.N.'s humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said she was "struck" by the devastation she saw in a shattered district of the central city of Homs.

Amos is the first independent outside observer to be allowed in Hom's Baba Amr since the military overran the district, wrestling it from rebel control on March 1 following a monthlong assault that brought international condemnation. She was allowed a brief tour in the ravaged district on Wednesday.

"The devastation there is significant. That part of Homs is completely destroyed and I am concerned to learn what happened to the people in that part of the city," she said in Damascus, after meeting with Syria's education and health ministers on Thursday.

In Cairo, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan said his top priority as special envoy to Syria is to end the violence and deliver badly needed aid.

Annan, who has been appointed joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, said his mission was to start a "political process" in Syria to resolve the one-year conflict there.

The uprising began with largely peaceful protests but faced with a vicious regime crackdown, became increasingly militarized. The U.N. says more than 7,500 people have been killed in the yearlong violence. Activists put the death toll at more than 8,000.

Addressing a news conference after talks on Thursday with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in Cairo, Annan said he has the full backing of the international community for his mission. He is scheduled to travel to Damascus on Saturday, where he will likely meet Assad.

Assad's power structure has seen a steady stream of army defectors who have joined a group of dissidents known as the Free Syrian Army, now numbering in the thousands, but civilian government officials have remained largely loyal.

That makes the defection of Husameddine, the deputy oil minister, significant.

"I do not want to end my life servicing the crimes of this regime," Husameddine said, announcing his resignation in a video on YouTube.

He identified himself as an "assistant" to the oil minister and a member of the ruling Baath Party and said he has served 33 years in various government positions. Ministers in Syria may have several assistants known as deputies.

In the video, Husameddine is shown wearing a suit and tie and sitting on a sofa at an undisclosed location, reading from a paper. "I, Abdo Husameddine, deputy oil and mineral resources minister, announce my defection from the regime and resignation from my post ... and declare that I am joining the dignified people's revolution," he said.

He appeared to address Assad directly.

"You have inflicted on those you claim are your people a full year of sorrow and sadness, denied them the their basic rights to life and humanity and pushed the country to the edge of the abyss," he said.

It was not clear when or where the video was filmed, and there was no immediate comment from Damascus.

Among numerous military defections recently was that of Syrian brigadier-general Mostafa Ahmad al-Sheik, who fled to Turkey in January, becoming the highest-ranking officer to defect.

In late August, Adnan Bakkour, the attorney general of the central city of Hama, appeared in a a video announcing he had defected from the regime. Authorities reported he had been kidnapped and said he was being kept against his will by gunmen. He has not been heard of since.

In the YouTube video, Husameddine said he was defecting "knowing full well that this regime will burn my home, persecute my family and make up a lot of lies."

"I advise my colleagues ... to abandon this sinking ship," he added.

It's been a while now since the AT&T Developer Summit where they announced six new Android devices would be coming to the carrier with one of those devices being the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD. In that time, we've not heard a whole lot of newws about the device though, it has now slipped on through the FCC.

If you'll all remember, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD features 4G LTE along with a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. In other words, a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket with LTE. Needless to say, it shouldn't be far off now that you'll be able to pick this one up in stores.

California Foundations Saw Significant Growth Between 1999 and 2009. A report completed by the USC Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy found that over the 10-year period the number of foundations grew by 71%, topping 7,100. The report also found that contributions to foundations more than doubled, to $6 billion; that the value of their assets grew by more than a third, to $93.3 billion; and that foundation growth in the state outpaced national trends over the period. World News - With broken leg, French journalist escaped Syria via ...

French journalist Edith Bouvier is loaded onto an ambulance on a stretcher after her arrival on a government plane at Villacoublay military airport near Paris on Friday.

Wounded French journalist Edith Bouvier feared her attempt to escape from Homs had ended inside a dark, 3-kilometer tunnel that rebels were using to supply the besieged Baba Amro district when the Syrian army bombarded its exit.

Her leg broken by a shell which killed two foreign journalists days earlier, Bouvier was abandoned, taped to a makeshift stretcher, as rebels and dozens of wounded fled the reverberations of explosions and headed back to the shattered neighborhood.?

"One of them placed his Kalashnikov on me. He put his hand on my head and said a prayer. It wasn't very reassuring. Then he left," Bouvier told Le Figaro newspaper, for which she was working in Syria.?

"I didn't know what was going to happen. Was the exit blocked? Were Syrian soldiers going to enter? I wanted to run away before remembering that I was taped to a stretcher."?

Bouvier and French photographer William Daniels, who stayed with her throughout, were finally rescued by a rebel who drove down 5.3 feet high tunnel on a motorbike and carried them back to Baba Amro.

Emerging into the light with her head bleeding, her shattered leg bandaged and wearing just underwear and socks after being forced to abandon her stretcher, Bouvier said she was greeted with shock by rebels when she asked for a cigarette.?

"Do you want to end your days here?" the startled fighters asked her. "If that's a long time in the future, sure. But not right now," she told them.?

Bouvier and Daniels arrived in Homs on February 21, joining a small group of war correspondents documenting the assault on the city by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, part of a nationwide repression that has killed more than 7,500 civilians according to the United Nations.?

"When the bombs fell, they told us 'that's Bashar saying good morning,'" Bouvier recalls of her first day, as shelling drew ever closer to the house where journalists were staying.?

Red Cross desperate to deliver aid as Syria shells Homs again

Fearing for their lives, the reporters decided to leave the three-story building, only to be caught by an exploding shell as they entered the street, wounding Bouvier and killing veteran U.S. war reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik.?

Taken to a makeshift rebel hospital, Bouvier received a scan and was told her femur was broken. "They told me 'you need an operation soon. You have to be evacuated.' That's when the great escape started."?

'Exhausted, physically and mentally'
Recounting the story of her week-long ordeal, Bouvier paid tribute to the bravery of Syrian rebels who risked their lives to get her and Daniels to safety as the elite 4th division of the Syrian army, commanded by the president's brother Maher al-Assad, pounded the city.?

Rejecting the Syrian government's claims that the rebels had tried to use the journalists as human shields, Bouvier said they were too afraid to leave with a Red Crescent convoy evacuating wounded civilians because of army sniper fire.?

With the tunnel blocked and Baba Amro close to falling to the army, the two journalists, the objects of a manhunt after their faces were broadcast on Syrian television, decided to risk everything by slipping out of the city in a vehicle under cover of darkness.?

"We were exhausted, physically and mentally. We had to get out of there," Bouvier said. Details of their escape route were not published by the newspaper to protect those who aided them.?

Moving from safe house to safe house, changing vehicles frequently and taking rocky mountain roads amid a snowstorm, it took the journalists and their rebel escort four days to travel the 25 miles to the Lebanese border. Everywhere strangers greeted them by name, welcoming them warmly.?

"They really put themselves in danger for us. They did everything for us," said Bouvier, who called her parents as soon as she crossed into Lebanon under cover of darkness. "I didn't tell them where I was, just that I was safe and sound."?

Meanwhile on Saturday, armed forces loyal to President Assad continued to bombard Homs.

Abu Hassan al-Homsi, a doctor at a makeshift clinic in Khaldiyeh district of Homs, said he treated a dozen wounded.

"This has become routine, the mortars start falling early in the morning," he said.?

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Saturday it was still negotiating with Syrian authorities who have denied its aid convoy access to the shattered Baba Amr district.

"The ICRC and Syrian Red Crescent are not yet in Baba Amr today (Saturday). We are still in negotiations with authorities in order to enter Baba Amro. It is important that we enter today," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan told Reuters in Geneva.

Saturday's bombing in Deraa marked the first time a suicide bombing struck an opposition stronghold. Daraa is the birthplace of the nearly year-old uprising against Assad. The revolt has killed more than 7,500 people, according to most recent U.N. estimates.

According to Paul Conroy, a Sunday Times photograph who fled Syria after being wounded in Homs, what's happening in Baba Amr is "systematic slaughter."?

He told the BBC from his hospital bed in the United Kingdom,?"I've done a fair few wars, I've never seen anything on this level...?There are no targets, it's pure systematic slaughter of a civilian population."

It's TI's time to brag. We first met OMAP5 when the company's VP of the OMAP division, Remi El-Ouazzane, unveiled the developer's reference platform on our stage at CES. While there, he boasted OMAP5 as "the greatest platform on Earth right now," but we were given only a few insights into the platform's capabilities. Now, TI is back with a new wave of demos that better show the prowess of OMAP5 -- a system-on-chip design that houses a dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU clocked at just 800MHz, two Cortex-M4 cores for low-power processes, along with a PowerVR SGX 544 GPU that handles 3D compositions, and a number of accelerators such as TI's IVA-HD, which supports both video encoding and decoding and plays 1080p video at a whopping 60fps. We were shown a demo of all these capabilities humming in unison on a 1080p display, along with a complex HTML5 mashup that adds credence to the company's latest benchmark report. Photography geeks should know the system supports up to 14 megapixel cameras, and is able to process ten shots per second at that setting. We're told to expect devices based on the OMAP5 platform by the end of the year, and if you're anything like us, it's going to be one hell of a wait. Hop the break for the demo.
