Explainer?s Trick-or-Treat Roundup

Happy Halloween! Happy Halloween!

Tis? the night in which things go bump, including your Halloween-themed questions. But fear not! Explainer is here to dispel your seasonal curiosities with answers from years gone by.

My kid brought in a massive haul of Halloween candy this year. Can it ever go bad?

Yes, but it might last until next Halloween or beyond. Candy bars are high in sugar and low in moisture, both of which help to prevent microbial growth. Pure chocolate can last for two years or more without presenting any acute health risks, but it?s likely to change in texture and become less appetizing after about 12 months. Given enough time, some bars could even become so dry and hard as to be inedible (or at least a danger to your teeth). More serious, nondental health risks are very unlikely, however. (Read more on candy expiration dates.)

A gaggle of sexy schoolgirls and naughty nurses just walked by?when did Halloween costumes become so tawdry?

In the 1970s. Costuming has been a part of Halloween since at least the 19th?century, when Scottish and Irish children went "guising" house-to-house in exchange for coins. The Victorians enjoyed a good costume ball on Halloween, and some daring get-ups, like Gypsy outfits, were popular. But risqu? costumes were not pervasive until right around Gerald Ford's presidency, when homosexual communities in the United States adopted Halloween as an occasion for revealing, over-the-top attire. (Read more on sexy Halloween costumes.)

It looks like people are still wearing those Hilary Clinton masks this year. Couldn?t she sue to force companies to stop making them?

Not really. She and her lawyers could make a case, but it's hard for public figures like politicians to sue and win in these situations. Depending on state laws, private individuals can control how their image is used under the "right of publicity," the legal principle that applies if someone uses your name or likeness to sell a product. (For example, a Texas teenager has?sued?Virgin Mobile for using a picture of her without permission in an Australian advertising campaign.) But when it's a politician or other prominent public figure, the right of publicity comes into conflict with the First Amendment, and our right to speak about?and mock?our leaders. (Read more about ?costumes inspired by public figures.)

I realize the ghosts in American Horror Story are far more eloquent, but back in my day, spirits just said ?boo!? Where does that word come from?

Ghosts were saying "boo!" by the middle of the 19th?century, though the exclamation had been used to frighten English-speaking children for at least 100 years before that. Perhaps the first appearance of?boo?in print comes from the book-length polemic?Scotch Presbyterian Eloquence Display?d?(1738), in which author Gilbert Crokatt defines it as , ?a word that?s used in the north of Scotland to frighten crying children.? (It's not clear why people in Scotland would want to frighten a crying child.) The verbal tactic had been adopted by?proper ghosts?and?people with sheets on their heads?by the 1820s at the latest. (Read more about the etymology of boo.)

Balance Your Entertainment Spending by Thinking About How Much Time You Spend with a Hobby

Balance Your Entertainment Spending by Thinking About How Much Time You Spend with a HobbyBudgetting for entertainment is tough when you have a lot of hobbies. Financial blog The Simple Dollar suggests you always dedicate some money on entertainment, even when money is tight. If you're struggling to think of what to spend your money on, think of how much time you spent with a hobby the last month.

It seems like common sense, but it's easy to get lost in your enjoyment of various hobbies and just throw money at all of them without really thinking about what matters. The Simple Dollar suggests you approach the question from two angles:

For me, my spending almost exactly matches how much time I spend engaging in and thinking about a particular hobby, at least to a certain extent.

I tend to think of this more in terms of the time I don't spend rather than the time I do spend.

The other part is figuring out where you're wasting a little money:

The one thing I ignore is the sense that I "should" pay more attention to a hobby. In the past, when I would feel like I hadn't spent much time on a particular hobby lately, I'd "cure" it by spending more money on that hobby.

Like everything else, your hobbies are likely to change over time, and even between seasons. If you're not watching a lot of movies at any given time, put that Netflix account on hold, or if you're not reading much of a magazine, cancel your subscription. Sometimes we'll form spending habits and just stick with them because we think we enjoy something, but as the Simple Dollar points out, it's a good idea to check those expenses to make sure you're still getting the most out of them.

'DWTS' pro: I'll spank Apolo to get more points

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Craig Sjodin / ABC

Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff.

Apolo Anton Ohno admitted on Monday night?s episode of ?Dancing With the Stars? that he and pro partner Karina Smirnoff had had a fight just prior to last week?s performance. ?(The duo?s samba still managed to earn an impressive 27 points.)

The Clicker was in the post show press line to help grill the duo on what went down -- and learn how they rebounded with Monday night?s perfect score of 30 for their Viennese Waltz.

?I found it difficult to reach him,? Smirnoff said of working with the Olympic-winning athlete. ?I didn?t know which door to knock on to get the reaction out of him that I wanted. We were like an old married couple. Finally, we had a fight and laid it out on the table.?

What was the battle about?

?Chocolate,? Ohno responded, deftly trying to diffuse the situation.

Smirnoff didn?t shed more light on specifics, but she hinted that their conflict was born out of the fact that men and women are just plain different.

?I told him men love with their eyes and women love with their ears,? she said. ?And that he should just keep telling me sweet things.?

?(Fighting) sucked,? Ohno said. ?But we came back together. This week, we were significantly different -- it couldn?t have been forced. We had to mutually want to come forward and work on a dance that was meaningful and had a dual purpose. It was great.?

While differences led to some conflict, Smirnoff feels that she and her partner are also very much alike.

?Apolo is my first athlete,? she noted (not counting her season 5 pairing with pro boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.). ?Apolo has discipline, and he?s as stubborn as I am. That works perfectly in the ballroom. He usually lets me in, but when he doesn?t we start fighting.?

The couple?s perfect score from last night and the positive comments from the judges clearly show that the duo is capable of moving past any difficulties.

Injecting some humor into her post-show interview, Smirnoff joked that she has a plan for future dances with Ohno.

?I?m definitely incorporating more butt-slapping,? she quipped, referring to the taps on the rear end that Kirstie Alley gave Maksim Chmerkovskiy in the cast?s group dance, which earned the duo the coveted additional two points from the judges.?

?It that gets extra points,? Smirnoff mused, ?I?m going to spank Apolo till we get some.?

Don?t just allow them to dangle in your sides or your front. You should have your opponent work for it. Wait in your opponent to increase his arms with the intention to seize you. Inadvertently, it will leave him open to your attack. This is when you take the chance to attack him.

?Never Take Your Eyes off Your Opponent?

Rule of the thumb in relation to wrestling: Never Look Down! Don?t look at the floor. Wherever the top goes, the body follows. You must also avoid looking up as a result of this place exposes your throat. Stand-up wrestling requires quick thinking. It?s essential know the way to mess with your opponent?s head. An excellent wrestler will possible pull his opponent?s head in several instructions simply so to get a reaction out of his opponent. Having your head manipulated this way messes with a wrestler?s focus and stability. This is why it?s important that you?ve got a robust neck. This is the place neck workouts assist a lot.

?Saddle Your Opponent Your Weight?

Your opponent is your mule when you find yourself inside the ring. You should let him carry your weight. If you happen to weight 600 lbs, then saddle him with each pound. Remember that wrestling is about ?wrestling management? away out of your opponent. That you must be in control, so you would be capable of hook him. It?s good to anticipate his moves, in order that you will know the right way to respond. That is how you win against your opponent.

What top VCs look for in gaming startups ? Tech News and Analysis

The following is an excerpt from a chapter of ?Game Design Secrets,? a new book by Wagner James Au. In this excerpt, two experienced venture capitalists talk about how they decide which game startups to invest in.

Nabeel Hyatt, a venture partner with?Spark Capital, is in a unique position to understand game design as a VC, because he began his career as a developer himself. Founder of Conduit Labs, a game studio acquired by Zynga in 2010, Hyatt then became a General Manager at the social game giant, where he led development of Adventure World.

Create games with great retention?and understand why they?re succeeding

Hyatt?s number one metric for games that interest him as investment prospects: Day-one retention, i.e. whether new users come back the next day to play. This is an especially important way for Hyatt to evaluate games he might not personally ?get? himself. His rule of thumb: Anything below 13 percent day-one retention is bad, while a great target is toward the 60-percent range. (If a game remains below 13 percent after a couple months despite attempts to grow retention, it may be time to kill it.)

Hyatt also looks for teams to invest in who understand why their game is succeeding?for instance, why players are rating the game highly, why day-one retention is strong, or even something as simple as why people smile while playing the game. ?That tells me a lot about their thought process,? Hyatt says. ?The games companies in this new ecosystem that are doing better and better are the ones asking why.? It used to be that games would evolve every few years with the launch of a new console; now, however, game evolution cycles are happening on a near quarterly cycle. For that reason, Hyatt says, ?It doesn?t matter how analytical you are or how cutthroat you are; it comes down to measuring those results to figure out how to get better.?

Pitch games that give players long-term aspirations

Hyatt puts a lot of stock in the long-term goals a game creates for a player: ?What?s the aspiration of a player? What?s the thing they?re trying to build in the future? How would they imagine themselves playing the game in a year? What?s the moment-to-moment experience in order to meet the aspiration?? This isn?t just a high-minded design goal, but good business sense. After all his firm invests in games as a recurring service, not games enjoyed for a day or two then discarded.

For the company pitching Hyatt, they need to answer two key questions: Why now? Why you? ?We invest in areas where there might be an opportunity for explosive growth,? he says. Most companies aren?t likely to realize such growth, so the developer must explain to him why they?re the exception.

Name your strengths as a startup?and your weaknesses

?What I want to see is an entrepreneur who understands their biggest strength and their biggest weakness and be able to talk about both honestly,? says Hyatt. Understandably, some developers in search of funding may hope to obscure their shortcomings, but Hyatt insists he would prefer if they instead face them head on, saying something like: ?If yo??re not going to invest, this is the number one reason you?re not going to invest.? Not only does this demonstrate that the developer truly understands his or her business, it also opens up an opportunity for the VC to offer suggestions and help the start-up.

There?s a corollary to this advice: The developer should know what they?re best at, and be able to explain why and how. ?A small company can?t be good at one hundred things,? Hyatt says. ?They can only afford to be number one in one area.?

* * *

A managing director with Lightspeed Venture Partners,? Jeremy Liew has invested in a number of successful gaming companies, including Playdom (acquired by Disney), Serious Business (bought by Zynga), and KIXEYE.

Have a plan that demonstrates repeatability and discoverability

As Liew puts it: ?How do you build a hit factory?? While not every game will be a hit, a startup should have some kind of native advantage which makes their games more likely to be a hit. That could be due to a built-in audience created by a series of sequels, or a hit niche game genre with real complexity and a passionate playerbase. As an example of that, he cites KIXEYE, which focuses on core gamers who are under-served by Facebook games.

For discoverability, Liew describes the current playing field this way: Whereas in the past, game distribution used to be the bottleneck (i.e., selling games in boxes on shelves), now most games are available online, so distribution is free and easy and democratic, and development on the larger platforms is relatively inexpensive. However, this very fact makes discoverability quite crucial. ?In a world where there?s tons and tons of games, how do you get to be the one people try and our talking about?? Liew says. As he notes, it?s just simply not enough to create a great game, unfortunately. ?There are [already] so many great games that are sitting out there, languishing,? he notes.

Don?t just talk about how good your game is?prove it with user data

Liew says this is a common mistake, with developers insisting in the face of his skeptical questions, ?Yeah, but the game is going to be awesome? that?s why it?s definitely going to work.? The hard user data shows that prediction, however, is almost always wrong. Instead, show Liew the data. He adds an adage that may be hard for developers to swallow: ?Game design is not predictive? user engagement is predictive.

Wondolowski ties MLS goal record

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Show me a record, and I?ll show a mark that deserves an asterisk. There?s always an argument to be made. Eric Dickerson had two more games than O.J. Simpson. Barry Bonds played with juiced baseballs and juice arms. Wilt Chamberlain?s 100-point game was less professional game than exhibition. Even free-falls from the edge of space require perfect weather conditions. Depending on your point to view, any record can be skewed. All it takes is enough cynicism.

But that?s the nature of records. They?re always set under the most advantageous?circumstances. To start picking them apart is to deny records themselves. No competitive result takes place in a vacuum, and if it did, we wouldn?t care. The meaning behind the achievement comes when the odds can go for or against you; when you have no control of the context; when you have to wait for circumstances beyond your control to lineup up so perfectly that it creates a once in a lifetime opportunity.

And then you still have to perform.

Other, lesser numbers may be more impressive in context, and still others may have been posted by those with half the talent and twice the luck. But to set a record ? to put your name on the top of a list that will be referenced for as long as people play soccer in this country ? everything has to come together, just as everything did for Chris Wondolowski, whose 27th goal of the season Saturday night tied him for the all-time single-season record in Major League Soccer.

MORE: Breaking down San Jose?s draw in Portland

You have to be good. You have to be impeccably good. Nobody stumbles into 27 goals. Other players have had more and better chances, but only one put away 27. Even if somebody someday hits 28, they?ll never be able to say Wondolowski didn?t deserve this mark.

You need help. ?Wondo? has the league?s best team around him, one that outscored the rest of the league by some distance. He helped get career years out of Steven Lenhart, Alan Gordon, Marvin Chavez and Sam Cronin. Rafael Baca and Simon Dawkins had their best professional seasons.

Wondo didn?t do it alone, and he knows it.

?I appreciate all the teammates that have done so much,? Wondolowski said afterward. ?[S]uch hard work ? a lot of credit goes to them.?

?I know when I play with him, or when he?s on the field, that he wants to win,? San Jose forward Steven Lenhart said, having played necessary role in Wondolowski?s record-tying effort. ?[H]e?s going to give everything he has, so it makes me give everything I have ? it?s just a joy to be a part of.?

You need the circumstances to fall in line. Four seasons ago, Wondolowski was playing for one of the best coaches in Major League Soccer, but he just didn?t fit with the team. He scored only four goals in 39 games in for Dominic Kinner in Houston (and San Jose). Traded to the Earthquakes, Wondolowski has slid into a system that fits his skillset. In his four seasons back in the Bay Area, Wondo?s scored 66 goals in 104 games.

MORE: See Wondo?s record-tying goal ? VIDEO

And you need luck. Wondolowski?s scored some goals from the spot (four), a few in added time (three goals beyond 90?), and handful while up a man (three). All these circumstances require luck, but it?s the same luck every striker that?s ever played has had on their sides. Wondo made the most of it.

On Saturday, a different kind of luck came into play when San Jose was awarded a controversial penalty. You can thank Steven Lenhart or Mark Geiger for goal 27, or you can credit Wondolowski for being in position to capitalize. Isn?t that what goal scoring?s all about?

It is the nature of records to be set when everything falls in line. If it wasn?t Wondolowski, it would have been somebody else years ?from now for whom the stars aligned. Today, 16 years after Roy Lassiter set the mark, Wondo became that somebody else, a somebody who sits unbeaten on Major League Soccer?s single-season goalscoring charts.

?To have my name even mentioned with him, it?s a true honor,? Wondolowski said of Lassiter, the man with whom is is now inextricably linked. ?I?m full of glee right now.?

He deserved the moment. Fans were left pondering the simulation that drew the fateful penalty, but their cynicism will fade, as it should. Other players have benefitted from such behavior, only their goals weren?t record-tiers. Just because Wondolowski?s was number 27 doesn?t mean it should overshadow the 26 that came before it.

And it won?t. No Bowie Kuhn is going to put an asterisk on this mark. There is the genuine feeling around the league that Wondolowski?s earned this.

?He?s had a tremendous, tremendous season,? Portland Timbers head coach Gavin Wilkinson said after the game, choosing to focus on Wondo?s record rather than how it came about. ?Take the decision out of it ? He?s tied the MLS record, and it?s gone to a very, very good player.?

If everything fell into place ? up to and including the final, record-tying goal ? it doesn?t make the mark any less valuable. It makes the mark no different than every other record that exists in competitive sports.

On Saturday, Chris Wondolowski took his rightful place along site Roy Lassiter. If there?s one thing that?s become clear over the last the last eight months, it?s that he?s earned the honor.

How Self-Talk and Stress Levels Impact Your Relationship With ...

How we deal with what most stresses us shapes and is shaped by how we communicate, and ultimately the relationship between you, your mind and body.

In Part 1, we looked at how inner self-talk impacts the quality of communication between your mind and body, and how the subconscious relies on this interpretive inner dialogue to understand you, regarding the specifics of your life from day one to the present moment, as part of its job in optimally operating all the systems that come together to make you?possible.

In this post, we consider how this inner stream of consciousness also impacts and is impacted by the direction and quality of the relationship you have with your self, mind and body, and arguably your life and relationships in general.

If how you talk to yourself inside decides whether your autonomic nervous system remains relatively calm or unnecessarily turns on your body?s survival system, that means you have a built-in capability to direct ? or redirect ? the overall state of your mind and body.

The power of interpretive thoughts and beliefs?

Your body, in the form of self-talk, makes subconscious decisions for you around the clock. This inner dialogue is a stream of consciousness that has an enormous effect on every aspect of your life and relationships.

Interpretive thoughts, in particular, form words and pictures that shape your imagination and, in turn, modulate your body?s emotion and physiology. When thought patterns are repeated, over time, they form emotional-command neural circuits that automatically direct what and how you think, talk and act, because ? they bypass the frontal cortex of your brain.

It?s?how your brain learns and adapts to change.

When this inner dialogue, however, consists of toxic thinking patterns and limiting beliefs that?unnecessarily?activate your survival system, literally, your body takes subconscious control of responses, thus, your capacity to make conscious choices.?In survival mode, the body shuts off most all communication to the higher cortex and relies instead on ?proven? protective strategies it has stored in memory.

As occurs in relationships, ?how? you communicate with your self impacts how you consciously or subconsciously relate with every aspect of yourself, i.e., your thoughts, emotions, feelings, physiological sensations, and so on.?Regardless how well-intentioned, in the same way that verbal attacks erode a relationship between two people, negative thoughts about your self or your attributes, etc., weaken the connection to your own inner resources by:

  • Activating survival response of the body to some degree.
  • Producing low-energy emotional states (fear-based) ?that disturb your sense of safety and security inside.
  • Turning off the regular operations of the body?s systems (reserved for protective mode) and thus otherwise amazing inner resources.
  • Blocking optimal emotional states, such as hope, compassion and belief in yourself, which are essential to energize actions toward a more healthy, happy and fulfilled you!

It?s an ongoing process, and love-based emotional states produce entirely different outcomes from fear-based ones.

This means that, in some areas of your life, habitual responses may be shaping your life ? rather than you.

Toxic patterns are limiting because they constrain, in varying degrees, what you believe is possible for you to achieve and who you are capable of becoming.

For example, the thought of stopping at a favorite place for a cup of coffee may not be cause for activating your survival response in most cases; however, what if you and a loved one had a heated argument at your favorite coffee shop the night before or last week? In this case, even though you?ve since made up, the thought may bring a rush of emotions that, in extreme cases, may lead you to (an unreasonable) decision to never go to this coffee shop again ? ever! In other words, the mere thought of coffee can activate dynamic processes in your body that cause you to re-experience the event. Even worse, if you?ve decided to never go to that coffee shop again, it means your body is reacting with nearly the same physiological intensity and processes it would use as if you were facing a lion in the jungle!

If this were the case, you?d likely consider this a limiting or debilitating thinking pattern, right?

Though this may sound absurd, your body makes subconscious decisions like this all the time. Is there a particular food, situation, or person with certain traits you go out of your way to avoid? Does a part of you seem to resist your efforts to change a behavior?

The deciding factor? Your beliefs.

How?s the relationship between you, your mind and body?

The beliefs you hold to be true about a situation form powerful perception filters that, in varying degrees, either limit or increase your options, thus, they have the power to either harm or enrich how you relate to yourself and the world around you.

Subconscious patterns are connected to emotional command circuitry in the brain that literally dictates whether, as a person, you are free to be overall happy and fulfilled or unhappy and overstressed. Thoughts and the underlying beliefs that spawn them determine whether you live a relatively fulfilling life or fight a losing battle with stress and stressors.

Like most, you may not be conscious of many of your perceptions; they are the habitual way you explain life experiences to yourself in your mind and they are subconscious.

Your choices are being controlled by subconscious choices you made (or were made for you) in the past.?Why subconscious?

First, they were recorded subconsciously. One of the reasons young children?s brain can quickly pick up a vast amount of information is that they have not yet formed ?perception? filters. Until children?s brains form selective perception filters, their subconscious allows the integration of a lot of unfiltered information. Once language is learned, the process is no longer passive. The subconscious mind can then turn off ?learning mode,? and go into the ?protective mode? as needed.

Second, a lot of potentially ?good? information is automatically ignored or rejected. Once the subconscious forms selective filters, a lot of healthy data goes undetected or gets automatically vetoed by these perception filters because of the selective, protective processes they activate.?Of course, most or all of this occurs beneath the surface of awareness, subconsciously.

If your inner dialogue decides whether your mind and body remain?relatively?calm or get?unnecessarily?triggered, that means you have a built-in choice, a capability to decide how you will direct ? or redirect ? the communication between you and your body, and thus decide how you relate to your mind and body, all parts of you.

Whether you make use of this amazing capacity, however, once again depends on what you believe. If your believe you are the agent and choice maker of your life in charge of your happiness, you will create radically different results than if you believe you have the short end of the stick, and blame certain others for your unhappiness.

The most important decision you make in life may be whether you are the primary agent who decides your choices and responses, particularly, when it comes the matters of the heart.?Do you wait for clues from others that you are loved, worthwhile, valuable, for example?

Who is in charge of your heart and happiness?

Your subconscious relies on your inner dialogue to understand you, regarding the specifics of your life from day one to the present moment, as part of its job in optimally operating all the systems that work together to make up the most amazing system of all: you!

Your responses or reactions say a lot about how you interpret events you experience in and around you. The belief systems you hold to be true form personal perception filters that automatically explain your experiences, and this rapid fire communication is going on at all time without your awareness as a function of your body?s natural orientation to learning.

Consciously or subconsciously, you are where you are in your life, for the most part, thanks to the thoughts you think on a consistent basis.

As occurs in relationships, how you communicate with your self inside enhances or reduces the relationship quality you have with all aspects of your physical, emotional and mental world.

Your internal dialogue or self-talk not only modulates the quality of communication between your mind and body, or conscious-self and subconscious-self, but also forms the basis for how you?relate?with yourself and inner (thus also outer?) world of sensations in your mind, consciously or subconsciously.

This can be good news. Conceivably it means your body (Nature?) expects you, at some point, to?develop?awareness of your built-in capacity to sort through and consciously, thoughtfully?choose?moment by moment?how?you use language to create optimal emotional states of mind and body in order to in turn create your best and healthiest you, life and future.

Perhaps the most important choice you make in life is whether to you believe, feel and treat your self as the choice-maker and creative agent of your life.

To do so is a prerequisite to embarking on a journey that forms and maintains quality relationships with your self, all parts of you, mind and body ? and life around. You deserve this (so does life around you).

NHL cancels games through November

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL lockout has forced the cancellation of all games through the end of November.

The NHL announced Friday that 326 regular-season games from Oct. 11 through Nov. 30 were lost ? more than 26.5 percent of the schedule. The news came one day after a league-imposed deadline passed for a deal with the players' association that would allow for a full season.

"The National Hockey League deeply regrets having to take this action," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "By presenting a proposal to the NHLPA that contemplated a fair division of revenues and was responsive to player concerns regarding the value of their contracts, we had hoped to be able to forge a long-term collective bargaining agreement that would have preserved an 82-game regular season for our fans. Unfortunately, that did not occur.

"We acknowledge and accept that there is joint responsibility in collective bargaining and, though we are profoundly disappointed that a new agreement has not been attained to this point, we remain committed to achieving an agreement that is fair for the players and the clubs ? one that will be good for the game and our fans."

The dispute is all too similar to the 2004-05 lockout that led to the cancellation of that entire season ? the first time a North American professional sports league lost a complete campaign to a labor dispute.

Reaching a new deal potentially became even tougher Friday, because the NHL pulled off the table its most recent offer to the players ? one that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues.

"The league officially informed us today that they have withdrawn their latest proposal and have cancelled another slate of regular-season games," union executive director Donald Fehr said in a statement. "This is deeply disappointing for all hockey fans and everyone who makes their living from hockey, including the players. But it comes as no surprise."

Whether any of the canceled games can be rescheduled in the event of a quick settlement remains to be seen.

Daly told the AP in an email that if a deal is reached, the league will try to play as many games as possible.

"Having said that, once clubs begin releasing dates and rebooking their buildings, as they will be free to do for the month of November, the process will obviously get more difficult and complicated," he wrote.

A quick decision on the status of the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star game later in January isn't expected, Daly said.

Last week, the NHL offered a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues, which exceeded $3 billion last season, but that proposal was rejected by the union. The players responded with three counteroffers, all of which would get the sides to a 50-50 deal, but the league quickly turned them down.

The NHL proposal was contingent on the league playing a full 82-game season, beginning on Nov. 2, which now won't happen.

Players earned 57 percent of revenue in the recently expired contract, in which a salary cap was included for the first time. Owners originally sought to bring that number below 50 percent this time around before the most recent NHL offer of 50-50.

Efforts by the players' association to resume negotiations this week were rebuffed by the NHL because the union declined to agree to start bargaining off the framework of the league's offer or issue another proposal using the league's proposal as a starting point.

There is a major divide between the sides over how to deal with existing player contracts. The union wants to ensure that those are all paid in full without affecting future player contracts. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed a willingness to discuss the "make whole" provisions on existing contracts, but only if the economic portions of the league's offer are accepted first by the union.

"Last week the owners gave us what amounts to a 'take-it-or-leave-it' proposal," Fehr said. "We responded with the framework for three proposals on the players' share, each of which moved significantly, toward their stated desire for a 50-50 split of HRR, with the only condition being that they honor contracts they have already signed. Honoring contracts signed between owners and players is a reasonable request. Unfortunately, after considering them for only 10 minutes they rejected all of our proposals."

This lockout, the third of Bettman's tenure as commissioner, began Sept. 16.

"We have repeatedly advised the owners that the players are prepared to sit down and negotiate on any day, with no preconditions. The owners refused," Fehr said. "They apparently are only interested in meeting if we first agree to everything in their last offer, except for perhaps a few minor tweaks and discussion of their 'make whole' provision.

"The message from the owners seems to be: if you don't give us exactly what we want, there is no point in talking. They have shown they are very good at delivering deadlines and demands, but we need a willing partner to negotiate. We hope they return to the table in order to get the players back on the ice soon."

AP-GfK poll: Romney edging out Obama on economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Americans are growing increasingly optimistic about the future of the U.S. economy, and likely voters trust Republican Mitt Romney slightly more than President Barack Obama to do a better job of managing it, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

On the cusp of an election offering stark choices on how best to handle the economy, 60 percent of Americans still describe the current economic situation as poor, but almost as many think things will get better in the coming year. More voters expect the number of unemployed to go down, too. Forty-two percent anticipate improvement in the jobs picture, up 10 percentage points from a month ago.

For all of the shifting dynamics in economic expectations and voters' growing comfort with Romney, though, the presidential race is still a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by 47 percent of likely voters and Obama by 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error.

And what matters most in the election endgame is Romney's standing in the handful of states whose electoral votes still are up for grabs. And polls in a number of those battleground states still appear to favor Obama.

After a commanding first debate performance and a generally good month, Romney has gained ground with Americans on a number of important fronts, including his overall favorability rating and voters' impressions of his ability to understand their problems. He's also sharply narrowed the gender gap, with women now split evenly between the two candidates and Romney holding a slight edge among men.

At the same time, expectations that Obama will be re-elected have slipped: Half of voters now expect the president to win a second term, down from 55 percent a month earlier.

Seventeen percent of likely voters in the survey reported they've already cast ballots, a sharp reminder to the candidates that they have little time left to sway voters.

Among those yet to vote, the economy is a recurring theme as they explain their decisions:

Monica Jensen, a 55-year-old independent from Mobile, Ala., says she voted for Obama in 2008 but will shift her vote to Romney this time, largely because of the economy.

"I'm ready for a change," she said. "I want to see the economy go in a different direction."

Ginny Lewis, a Democrat and 72-year-old retired district attorney from Princeton, Ky., says she'll vote for Romney because "I'm tired of the Republicans blaming all the debt on Democrats, so let them take over and see what they do."

Not that she's optimistic about how that will turn out, though. "I think things will get worse before they get better," she said.

Lindsey Hornbaker, a 25-year-old graduate student and nanny, hasn't been swayed by Romney's charm offensive.

Hornbaker, interviewed Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, where she was attending an Obama rally, said Romney can tweak his tone but not what she sees as a record focused far more on top income earners and out of touch with most working families.

"I heard him go out of his way to sound so moderate during the debate," she said. "And I thought: 'Who is this? Where did this come from?' He may sound like he's focused on the middle class. But where's the record?"

As the election nears, Romney has been playing down social issues and trying to project a more moderate stance on matters such as abortion in an effort to court female voters. The AP-GfK poll, taken Friday through Tuesday, shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women at 47-47 after lagging by 16 points among women a month earlier.

But now his campaign is grappling with the fallout from a comment by a Romney-endorsed Senate candidate in Indiana, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended."

Romney quickly distanced himself from the remark by Republican Richard Mourdock.

But Obama was happy to keep the matter current, telling a crowd in Florida on Thursday: "As we saw again this week, I don't think any politician in Washington, most of whom are male, should be making health care decisions for women," Obama said. "Women can make those decisions themselves."

A renewed focus on social issues would be an unwelcome development for Romney: Among female likely voters, 55 percent say Obama would make the right decisions on women's issues, compared with 41 percent who think Romney would.

Romney's pitch to women has been focused squarely on the economy, making the case that what women want most is to ensure their families and their country are on a solid financial footing. The poll shows that message appears to be taking root.

A month ago, women favored Obama over Romney on the economy 56 percent to 40 percent. Now, the split has shifted to 49 percent for Romney and 45 percent for Obama.

Similarly, Obama's lead among women as the candidate who better understands the people's problems has narrowed considerably, from a 58-36 Obama advantage last month to a 50-43 Obama edge now.

Obama, meanwhile, has been working to shore up his support among men, who tend to be more Republican than women. In the 2008 election, men broke 49 percent for Obama to 48 percent for John McCain, even though Obama got 53 percent of the vote overall. The president's job approval ratings among men have tended to fall below his ratings among women throughout his first term.

A month ago, Romney's advantage among men was 13 percentage points. Now, it's down to 5 points, with most of the shift toward Obama coming among unmarried men.

Obama's election chances hinge on turning out voters like Jon Gerton, a disabled construction worker from Jonesboro, Ark. Gerton's a staunch Obama supporter ? but he didn't vote in 2008.

"It takes longer than four years to get things to the point where things are going better," Gerton said. "Four years, it's not very long."

There has been a gender gap in every presidential election since 1980. In 2008, women were 7 percentage points more likely than men to vote for Obama.

Count Chrysta Walker, of Cedar Lake, Ind., among the voters who are sticking with Obama because they think he's got the right solutions for the fragile economy.

"He's got the middle class at heart," says the 58-year-old Walker. On the economy, she says, Obama "did as well as could be expected because he didn't get a lot of cooperation."

David Bierwirth, who owns an autograph sales business in Las Vegas, turned out at a Romney rally in Henderson this week to show his support for the GOP nominee. To Bierwirth, his vote for Romney is all about the economy.

"I want people back to work," he says, "because then they will buy my products."

The Associated Press-GfK poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

This Weekend: An Early Halloween - New York Botanical Garden

Thanksgiving has it so easy. It?s on the same day every year, and close enough to the weekend that you can plan to party around the table until the wee hours (barring a completely bonkers Black Friday schedule). But Halloween? Not so much. We?re usually left to the mercy of the calendar, and this October?s schedule lands the night of spooks and specters square in the middle of the work week. Hump day isn?t exactly party central for most New Yorkers, and it?s a school night for your mini monsters. But that shouldn?t dampen your spirits! This weekend, October 26 through 28, the NYBG holds its own ghoulish galas to mark the occasion a little early.

Our Spooky Nighttime Adventures ramp up as of this Friday night, marking the start of trick-or-treating, arts and crafts, and exploring the creepiest aspects of the Garden after dark?all in a safe environment for your kids to romp around. The Haunted Pumpkin Garden will be in its element, and that?s not to mention the horde of skulking harvester zombies carved into life by Ray Villafane this past weekend. Don?t forget to register for tickets?we?re extremely close to selling out for every single evening, and our limited nightly offering of walk-up tickets is far from guaranteed with such high demand!

We?re ready to party, costumes and all, so bring your otherworldly outfits and join us for the moonlight masquerade! For dedicated fright fiends, tickets to a Priceless Forest Walk offer an appetizer to the evening with a guided storytelling tour through our 50-acre Forest at dusk, after which you can jump right into our Spooky Nighttime Adventures. Better yet, you can get in a full day at the Garden while the sun is up to take advantage of our scheduled tours, the Saturday Bird Walk, and Sonia Uyterhoeven?s enlightening gardening demonstrations; this weekend, her focus falls on the bulb basics that everyone should have in hand before they start planting their tulips and hyacinths.
