Wonder headlines NYC concert highlighting poverty

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stevie Wonder gave and electrifying performance at New York's Central Park in front of thousands of fans and several world leaders Saturday, singing his hits and calling for an end to poverty worldwide at the Global Citizen Festival.

Bono gave a funky, rousing introduction to Wonder, who headlined the second annual concert. Wonder wowed audience members, who danced and sang along to songs including "Superstition" and "Isn't She Lovely."

"This is a global celebration," Wonder yelled to the crowd. "We will end extreme world poverty in our lifetime."

Wonder has been a United Nations Messenger of Peace with a special focus on disabilities since 2009. Messengers have recognized talents in the arts, academia and sports and help bring attention to U.N. work.

The Global Citizen Festival coincides with the U.N. General Assembly. Fans earned free tickets for helping spread the word or volunteering to help end world poverty. World leaders who attended included Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

"There is so much energy here tonight. We can power the world," Ban told the crowd.

Will.i.am and Olivia Wilde were among the celebrity attendees.

Wonder ended the five-hour event, electrifying the crowd during his hourlong performance. He even teased concertgoers before singing "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours."

"That's it!" he yelled, then added: "Y'all wanna jam some more?"

John Mayer also performed Saturday and was a favorite with his solo work on the guitar. He was full of power when he performed "Slow Dancing In a Burning Room" and "Gravity."

"It's so nice to be here," he said.

Other performers included Kings of Leon and Alicia Keys, whose set included "No One" and "Empire State of Mind."

"I believe if we don't care about each other, who will?" the singer said. "Help me celebrate tonight so we never forget."

Wonder also had a touching moment when he sang John Lennon's "Imagine" and encouraged the audience to lobby for more gun laws.

"Can you believe blind people have guns?" he said. "Let's keep it real. Ridiculous."

Last year's Global Citizen Festival featured Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters and The Black Keys. The festival's nonprofit partners pledged $1.3 billion in new fundraising commitments last year.

Wonder, who played the piano and harmonica, was joined onstage by R&B singers Maxwell and Janelle Monae.

"I can't believe this is happening," Maxwell gushed when singing "Superstition."

Movie Review ? Don Jon - You Don't Know Jersey

Don-Jon-Movie-Poster_SFW

?

This movie is about a guy who loves porn. It is frank, honest, in your face, and doesn?t pull any punches. It is in no way shy and nothing I say can truly prepare you for how bold this film is. Taking an outrageous concept and writing it really well is always a recipe for great storytelling. This movie does that and more. It does what any great film should do. It explores its subject matter to the fullest without any limits or restrictions and it makes a point. It has well developed characters and relationships and genuine character and story arcs.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Don Jon.?The main components of his life involve hanging out and picking up women at nightclubs and having dinner with and going to church his family.??He is a good looking guy who picks up beautiful women and has sex with them on a regular basis. The problem is that he doesn?t get the same high as he does from porn. He would honestly rather get off to porn than a real life girl. That may sound strange but if you see the movie he will lay out his reasoning that leads him to that conclusion. When Scarlett Johansson enters his life, he feels like he has found something special and his entire life changes. However, what happens next probably isn?t what you will expect and I?m not going to give anything away.?Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson are terrific in their roles and disappear like chameleons into their characters. They nail their accents and mannerisms of their characters which is all the more impressive since these roles are unlike anything they have done before. Scarlett Johansson?s accent is so amazing?you would think that she was born with it.

Most movies about men and women aren?t this honest, realistic or entertaining. This movie makes so many other relationship movies look like a complete waste of time. It sets a standard and style that other movies should emulate. I would definitely like to see more movies like this. With so many cookie cutter movies out there I can emphasize enough how?exciting it is to see a movie that is bold and not afraid of anything. Don Jon is fresh, raw, intelligent and original. It is even more exciting to watch a movie that is like nothing you have seen before because it is like exploring uncharted territory. This movie does that and more and is one of the best movies of the year so far.

As I was watching the movie I was blown away by the sheer honesty, dialogue and energy of each scene. I kept wondering how Joseph Gordon-Levitt got this movie made. I pictured the script in my head and imagined studio executives cringing at some of the dialogue and subject matter. I guess after making plenty of critically acclaimed films and box office hits, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was able to leverage his clout as well as big name actors into getting the studio to go for it and that?s a good thing. This movie is a home run and one of the biggest surprises I have had in a long time.

A.I. Watch

Smartwatches are in trend these days and A.I Watch is one of the newest additions to this segment and it may be considered a ?threat? to the i?M Watch and Omate TrueSmart?for a good reason.

A.I. Watch comes with a full Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich experience, this means we are able to place and receive calls like on any 3G smartphone, because the smartwatch has a SIM slot supporting?850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM ?bands.

On the hardware side, the A.I. Watch packs a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (unknown maker), 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, a 500 mAh battery capacity and it even has a 5MP camera. The display is 1.54? in diagonal with 240?240 screen resolution.

If its creators will manage to raise $100,000 on Indigogo, the A.I. Watch will retail for $280.

iPhone 5C Review - Business Insider

?

The iPhone 5C, the colorful new plastic phone from Apple, is the same phone Apple introduced last year.

It has the same processor, same rear camera, same screen (4 inches), and same glitzy new iOS 7 software that most iPhones and iPads updated to this month. For specs geeks, the only new things you'll see are a slightly larger battery and a slightly better front-facing camera for video chats.

But the iPhone 5C is really just the iPhone 5 covered in shiny plastic that comes in five color options.

However, that doesn't make the iPhone 5C a bad phone.

The Plastic

I'm not a fan of plastic phones. They often feel flimsy and not at all like the ~$600 premium pocket computers they're marketed as. Samsung is perhaps the biggest offender with the Galaxy S4, an unattractive device wrapped in creaky, cheap-feeling plastic.

But the "C" in iPhone "5C" does not stand for cheap. The plastic feels really good, almost like ceramic. It's polished with a shiny lacquered coating, to the point where the device is almost slippery. There aren't any bends, creaks, or squeaks when you grip it. The buttons (also plastic) feel like they're molded directly into the body. They're so sturdy that I was surprised I could even press them.?

iPhone 5C back

Steve Kovach/Business Insider

The iPhone 5C may be the cheaper of Apple's two new iPhones, but it still?feels like a premium product.?

I laughed out loud when Apple's design guru Jony Ive called the iPhone 5C "unapologetically plastic" in the device's promo video, but now I know what he meant. Apple doesn't do anything on the cheap.

It's attractive too. I'm personally not a fan of the color options, but I'm sure there are plenty of people looking for something beyond the black, white, and gold variants the iPhone 5S comes in. The 5C is a little thicker and heavier than the iPhone 5/5S due to the heavy duty plastic coating, but it's still plenty thin and light compared to other rival smartphones.?

Colorful Inside And Out

But other than the pretty colors, the iPhone 5C is still the same device Apple gave us last year. You get all the same apps, services, and features as any other iPhone running iOS 7. That means you also get Apple's refreshed software and redesigned apps right out of the box. In short, there's nothing the iPhone 5C can do that the iPhone 5 can't. It's that simple.

iPhone 5C home screen

Steve Kovach/Business Insider

Each iPhone 5C ships with a wallpaper that matches the outside plastic. It's our first sign of how Apple now thinks about its hardware and software design. The two are interconnected, thanks mostly due to the fact that Jony Ive is now in charge of all design Apple. (Before he just designed hardware.) In a way, the colorful new iOS 7 feels more natural on the iPhone 5C than it does on the 5S or any other iThing. It's almost as if Ive and his team designed the software to fit the 5C first and just ported it to the rest of the iPhone/iPad family.?

Conclusion

You probably shouldn't buy the iPhone 5C. It's a great device, but you can get the best Apple has to offer for just $100 more. And the iPhone 5S will likely hold up much better in another year or two than the iPhone 5C will. Apple tends to only add the best new software features on its best phones, so there's a chance the iPhone 5C could be left out in the future because its hardware is too old.

So unless you really want to save $100 and really want a bright and colorful phone, the 5S is a better choice.

All of Knott?s new mazes this season are innovative in one way or another. This one is a hall of mirrors, a literal maze in which guests can go astray.

The concept dictates it will be a slow-loading attraction, and wait times were an hour or more for most of opening night Friday.

?Mirror Mirror? occupies a tent in Camp Snoopy (called Necropolis on Haunt nights).

A tape of the Green Witch, the Haunt?s signature character, warns guests of the mirrors? magic at high volume from speakers atop the structure.

Over the course of an hour, the witch?s convulsive cackle can go from entertaining to excruciating.

Guests are admitted into the tent in groups of a dozen or so.

Once inside, strobes and other lighting effects add to the intensity of the experience.

I couldn?t say that I mastered the mirror maze. I just followed a middle school kid ahead of me who was following his father. At some point a cast member opened an exit door and I was back in Camp Snoopy.

6 Great Board Games (For Ruining Friendships) | Cracked.com

I played a lot of board games growing up, because I was an aggressively unathletic kid who appreciated any socially acceptable excuse to play with toys, and games are essentially toys with rules (this is a phase I have yet to grow out of). And competition is an integral part of most games, so a certain amount of skullduggery among friends is to be expected. However, there are some games, regardless of how fun or awesome they may be, that seem to have been designed for the explicit purpose of ruining friendships. The following board games are virtually guaranteed to leave you and your friends feeling so bitter that the rules might as well read "Stuff corpse shit into an electric toaster and leave it cooking in the center of the table while players take turns screaming racism into each other's open mouths until both slots pop up and scald everyone's faces with zombie diarrhea."

#6. Risk

Parker Brothers/Hasbro via YouTube

Risk (or alternately Risk! back when conversations about the game were apparently intended to include a lot of declarative shouting) is the game of global domination. You assume command of an army of ambiguous nature and intent and attempt to take control of the entire world, crushing those who oppose you under your war-mongering boot heel. There's no room for diplomacy in Risk -- it's a steel cage match between Jeff Hardy, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and a shimmering leprechaun cauldron of pure crystal meth. The only victory condition possible is total fucking elimination.

Parker Brothers/Hasbro via Target.com
With an exclamation point.

The problem is, the only people who ever suggest playing Risk are the ones who have never lost a game of Risk. It's like a shorter version of Monopoly, only without the equalizing element of chance. Consequently, the only way to win is to actually be good at the game, and the only people who are good at Risk tend to be cartwheeling douchegoblins about it. Just keeping a copy in your house is like hanging a picture of the time you ran into Shia LaBeouf at Hooters in a frame above your television. It is an accomplishment the rest of us neither envy nor need to be constantly reminded of.

Parker Brothers/Hasbro via YouTube
"Man, Johnny even has an exit strategy. He's too good."

More importantly, it's impossible to get better at Risk -- you either start out bad and get progressively worse each time or win every single game. So, inviting a group of friends to your apartment and then saying "Hey, everyone, let's play Risk!" is essentially the same as Channing Tatum getting a bunch of people together to watch him do stomach crunches for two to three hours. I know your abs are better than mine, Channing. I don't need you to flex me into submission while I'm stuck in Australia earning two goddamned armies each turn.

Parker Brothers/Hasbro via YouTube
What you're seeing here is essentially the plot of Rambo III.

#5. Fireball Island

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube

Fireball Island is a 3D board game wherein you try to beat your friends in a frantic race up the side of an angry Polynesian volcano god to steal his magical jewel and claim victory. The commercial offers a breathtaking glimpse into a bygone era when people would set fire to elaborate jungle film sets in order to sell board games to children.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube
And dress a kid up like Paul Freeman in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The volcano constantly spits out fireballs, hence the title, and if your piece gets knocked over, you have to go all the way back down the trail and start over. But the volcano doesn't act on its own -- you and your friends play cards to aim the screaming demon mouth and spew forth its blazing ammunition.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube
"JESUS CHRIST!"

So really, the game is less about who can beat whom up the side of the mountain and more about who can be the biggest festering asshole and knock everyone into a rocky canyon or off the lip of a seaside cliff with the judicious application of molten vengeance. Nobody gives a shit about the jewel five minutes into a game of Fireball Island. It's all about blasting your friends with fireballs until everyone gets sick of it and quits to go play Sega.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro via YouTube
"I only invited you because my mom made me, Tina. Take your plastic gemstone and get the hell out of my house."

#4. HeroQuest

Milton Bradley/Hasbro/Games Workshop via YouTube

HeroQuest is a board game of heroic fantasy that has everyone playing together on a team against one person, because somebody has to control all the monsters and dungeon traps and essentially act as the game's referee, even though sports-related terms are generally a terrifying spider web of confounding uncertainty for kids who spend their free time throwing polyhedral dice at tiny plastic doom lords. The hero players work together to hew their way through swarms of monsters in a cursed keep, patiently accepting the monster player's rulings with grace and good humor, and at the end of the game everyone high-fives and skateboards down to 7-Eleven for a congratulatory round of best-friend Slurpees.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro/Games Workshop via YouTube
Just look at the camaraderie exploding from this picture.

At least that's what it says on the box. An actual game of HeroQuest is a two-hour screaming match over whether your dwarf actually stumbled through a door into a head-cleaving booby trap or was merely considering stumbling through a door into a head-cleaving booby trap.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro/Games Workshop via YouTube
"Bullshit! My dwarf totally sees that guy!"

It isn't uncommon for a session of HeroQuest to devolve into threats of physical violence over whether enough of the Skeleton King's resplendent bonefinger crown was sticking out from around a corner for your wizard to spot him and blast a face-detonating mystical fireball into his undead eye socket. It's like a clinic teaching burgeoning sociopaths how to get the most out of a verbally abusive relationship.

Milton Bradley/Hasbro/Games Workshop via YouTube
"I swear to God, Timmy, if you don't move that monster the hell out of my way, I will shit on my fist and punch you in the teeth."

Since the hero team is typically three to four people strong and the monster team only ever consists of one person, the game seems to be actively encouraging the heroes to bully their way through a series of explosive personal-attack-laden arguments that are typically resolved by the monster player quitting and pedaling his or her bicycle home in tearful indignation. My father once rage-quit a game of HeroQuest, back when I was in elementary school and he was 40 fucking years old. It's a brutal game best reserved for those occasions when you want to completely sabotage your relationship with a single friend or relative.

Colo. immigrants face uncertainty after floods

EVANS, Colo. (AP) ? Immigrants living in the U.S. illegally returned to their mobile home parks in flood-ravaged Colorado to find that there was little left to salvage ? not the water-damaged cars, not the old family pictures and not the sheds carried away by the rushing waters.

The destruction, however, was only the beginning of what's been a nightmarish two weeks. They didn't have flood insurance. And because they are not citizens or legal residents ? and don't have family members who are ? they won't get the federal government's help.

"They say that faith and hope die last," said Juan Partida, 40, a dairy worker who along with his wife Mari, who is pregnant, do not qualify for federal emergency aid because they are in the country illegally. "We need to have faith and hope that we'll get help."

How quickly they can rebuild their lives, relying largely on local government and nonprofit organizations, will have long-term ramifications on the Weld County industries that depend on their labor, from meatpacking plants and farms to construction and hotels.

"They're out of their homes, and a lot of them have lost their vehicles in this, they're impacted. So the economy is going to be impacted," said Lyle Achziger, mayor of Evans, a city on the northern plains whose population of 19,500 is 43 percent Latino.

Achziger said officials responding to the disaster have been learning about the immigrants' importance to the region's economy. He said the city hopes to get people help by getting them to register with the city, county and other volunteer aid organizations.

"We have told them that immigration status is not our focus. And I will repeat that again, that is not our focus. Our focus is getting people out of the cold, getting a roof over their head and getting them a warm meal," he said.

The JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley employs nearly 50 immigrant workers whose families were displaced. The company has paid for hotels, delivered food, and tried to connect families with available services, company spokesman Cameron Bruett said.

"They're certainly a critical element of our team," Bruett said.

The waters that ripped through the Evans mobile home park the morning of Sept. 13 gave residents only minutes to get out. Many left with just the clothes they were wearing.

In Partida's trailer, he and his wife had toys and clothes from their boys, 8 and 3, who died in a car accident nearly a year ago with their aunt and uncle. "Not being able to get none of those things out, for me that's what's saddens me the most," he said.

In all, there were about 150 homes. Every single one is marked with an orange X to signify it's uninhabitable.

Many of the mobile park residents came from Mexico, and those in the country illegally will not get help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency unless they have U.S. citizen children or a family member who is a legal resident.

For those who do qualify for FEMA aid, immigrant advocates are concerned there's a lack of Spanish-language speakers to help families navigate the system.

When a FEMA housing inspector visited Sofia Mendez, 59, the meeting left her confused about what help she would get, she said. Mendez, who is a naturalized citizen, started buying her $29,000 trailer in Evans about a year ago.

At her home this week, Mendez walked slowly with a cane and wore knee-high plastic boots needed to slog through the heavy mud. Her voice wavered as she pointed to the things she lost.

"This is a picture of my granddaughter," she said, pointing to a frame streaked with so much mud it was difficult to make out the face. Pointing to blue tiles on her kitchen counter, she said, "I put those there."

For now, Mendez and her 28-year-old son, who is disabled, are staying with a friend.

In nearby Milliken, a small town tucked amid farm fields, mobile homes that were near the Big Thompson and Little Thompson rivers faced similar devastation as Evans. Latinos account for 28 percent of Milliken's 5,800 residents.

Forty-five trailers suffered varying degrees of damage, said Milliken Mayor Milt Tokunaga. "It doesn't matter if it's an undocumented person or not as far as the impact because they pay taxes here, there's a local carniceria, they do shopping here," he said.

So far, many families have been relying on friends and relatives for housing, and volunteer organizations like the Red Cross, churches, and the Salvation Army for clothing, food and other supplies. There have also been anonymous donations. Someone paid for hotel lodging for 20 families until the end of the month.

"All of them have been amazing to the families, but it is on a temporary basis, day-by-day. Like you can sleep here for tonight, here's food for today," Milliken resident Allison MacDougall told FEMA officials at a town meeting this week.

The officials told her they wished there was another way, but that all they could do was refer them to volunteer aid organizations.

"We were flooded like everyone else. We suffered the same damage," said Norma Miramontes, 42, who along with her husband, a construction worker, is in the U.S. illegally.

They may be eligible for federal aid because her mother, who lives with them, is a legal resident, but they haven't heard back from FEMA. "We pay taxes, we work here," Miramontes said. "We're not getting something for free."

American Eagle pilot union: Contract approval by PSA pilots brings ...

The top guys at American Eagle?s pilot union expressed the union?s ?profound disappointment? Friday that PSA Airline pilots had approved a concessionary contract.

The message came from Bill Sprague and Matt Rettig, the chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Air Line Pilots Association?s Master Executive Council at American Eagle.

?While we respect the right of the PSA pilots to determine what is best for them and their families, we believe it was a colossal mistake to unnecessarily drive the industry standard to such a miserable level,? Sprague and Rettig wrote.

?This deal in some ways mimics what was negotiated by Endeavor Air (formerly Pinnacle Airlines Inc.), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, during their effort to avoid liquidation in bankruptcy,? they wrote.

?One significant difference is that the Endeavor pilots were compensated for many of the concessions they provided.? The only potential gain for the PSA pilots in this deal is the possibility of new aircraft,? Sprague and Rettig concluded.

They told American Eagle pilots that the PSA deal will be reviewed by ALPA president Lee Moak to see if it conforms to ALPA standards.

?If it takes effect, this new low bar will make it more difficult for other pilot groups, including us at Eagle, to have fair and livable pay and work rules,? the pair wrote.

?Everyone likes shiny new jets, but they must not be financed by cutting the pay and benefits that we have worked so hard to achieve.? We believe this is exactly what the PSA pilots have signed the industry up for,? Sprague and Rettig warned.

Keep reading for the entire message to American Eagle pilots.

Fellow Eagle Pilots:

It is with profound disappointment that we learn of the ratification of the concessionary TA at PSA. While we respect the right of the PSA pilots to determine what is best for them and their families, we believe it was a colossal mistake to unnecessarily drive the industry standard to such a miserable level.? This deal in some ways mimics what was negotiated by Endeavor Air (formerly Pinnacle Airlines Inc.), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, during their effort to avoid liquidation in bankruptcy.? One significant difference is that the Endeavor pilots were compensated for many of the concessions they provided.? The only potential gain for the PSA pilots in this deal is the possibility of new aircraft.

It is unclear whether this deal is contingent upon the pending lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice challenging the merger, but it appears unlikely to occur without one.? The next step in the process is for the ALPA President to decide whether the agreement conforms to the direction and goals of the Association membership.? Our MEC strongly encourages him to be deliberate in his examination of the agreement prior to signing it.? If it takes effect, this new low bar will make it more difficult for other pilot groups, including us at Eagle, to have fair and livable pay and work rules.? Everyone likes shiny new jets, but they must not be financed by cutting the pay and benefits that we have worked so hard to achieve.? We believe this is exactly what the PSA pilots have signed the industry up for.

Please try to keep your efforts and actions positive, constructive and oriented toward drawing us together as a team. It is critical that we stand together as a unified group while we navigate the difficult road ahead.? Please communicate all ideas, suggestions and offers of assistance to your local reps as one of our strengths is having the perspective and experience of 2900 airline pilots.

We remain open to any reasonable proposal from management which could bring airplanes to Eagle to replace the ones we?re retiring and ensure Eagle?s viability. We look forward to an earnest discussion with management about how best to proceed.

Sincerely and in unity,

Bill Sprague, MEC Chairman

Matt Rettig, MEC Vice-Chairman

Vucetich recalls Ochoa for Mexico qualifiers

[HEXAGONAL COUNTDOWN] Mexico's new coach, Victor Manuel Vucetich, has recalled goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa for El Tri's World Cup qualifying matches against Panama and Costa Rica.

Once again, Real Sociedad star Carlos Vela, who has not played for the national team since March 2011, was left out, as were three foreign-based players who played in the 2-0 loss to the USA: Andres Guardado, who plays for Spain's Valencia, and Diego Reyes and Hector Herrera, who both moved to Portugal over the summer.

Manchester United's Javier Hernandez, Espanyol's Hector Moreno and Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos and Javier Aquino were the other European-based players recalled.

Meanwhile, the second week of training for domestic players begins Sunday in Mexico City. The only player missing from the group that trained this week is the injured Angel Reyna.

Mexico Domestic Camp:
Goalkeepers: Jesus Corona (Cruz Azul), Jonathan Orozco (Monterrey), Alfredo Talavera (Toluca)
Defense: Rafael Marquez (Leon), Johnny Magallon (Leon), Severo Meza (Monterrey), Hiram Mier (Monterrey), Miguel Layun (Club America), Hugo Ayala (Tigres), Carlos Salcido (Tigres), Jorge Torres Nilo (Tigres)
Midfielders: Jesus Zavala (Monterrey), Lucas Lobos (Tigres), Luis Montes (Leon), Carlos Pena (Leon), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Christian Gimenez (Cruz Azul), Isaac Brizuela (Toluca),? Fernando Arce (Tijuana).
Forwards: Marco Fabian (Guadalajara), Aldo de Nigris (Guadalajara), Damian Alvarez (Tigres), Raul Jim?nez (Club America), Oribe Peralta (Santos).

On Continuing Resolution And Debt Ceiling, Pelosi Says Republicans 'Living Dangerously' Instead Of 'Legislating Responsibly'

?The ideology of the Republicans is a luxury the American people cannot afford,? Pelosi said at a news briefing, ?especially when it comes to putting in doubt the full faith and credit of the United States of America.?

Senators are currently debating a temporary funding measure known as a continuing resolution, received from the House last week. The bill proposed to fund the entire government except Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is expected to remove the language about defunding the health care law from the legislation before returning it to the House.

House Republicans are looking to also use the removal of funding from Obamacare as a condition for raising the debt limit.

Democrats and Republicans have been at a logjam for months on the budget. Pelosi has dismissed House Republicans as embracing confusion rather than clarity.

?What they say in the morning doesn?t exist in the evening,? Pelosi said.

?It?s impossible for Democrats to negotiate with House Republicans when they can?t even negotiate with themselves.? Pelosi said. ?Instead of legislating responsibly they want to live dangerously and that?s not good for the American people.?

She once again called for a clean debt limit increase. On the matter of the continuing resolution, the minority leader said, ?Let?s see what the Senate sends back to us.? But for now, Pelosi said it is hard to build consensus when it is uncertain what the Republicans will send Democrats.

The government shuts down on Monday if the gridlock continues.

Third case of plague reported in New Mexico

Thursday, September 26, 2013 - 11:25am

The New Mexico Department of Health announced today a confirmed case of plague in a 52-year-old man from Santa Fe County.

Confirmatory testing was performed at the Department?s Scientific Laboratory Division.

This is the third human case of plague in New Mexico and in the United States this year.

An environmental investigation will take place at the man?s home to look for ongoing risk to others in the surrounding area.

?Whenever there is a human case of plague the Department takes several steps to ensure the safety of the immediate family, neighbors, and health care providers,? said Department of Health Secretary Retta Ward, MPH.

?We inform neighbors door-to-door about plague found in the area and educate them on reducing their risk. We determine whether individuals close to the patient may also have been exposed to the plague and recommend preventative treatment when necessary.?

The Department?s investigation also includes:

? Alerting physicians and veterinarians that plague is in the area, making sure they contact the Department of Health if they have a suspect case of plague, and offering the services of the Department?s Scientific Laboratory if they need to test for a suspect case of plague in either humans or animals.

? Conducting an environmental investigation at the most likely place of exposure, looking for signs of a plague die-off in rodents, infected fleas in nearby rodent burrows, or evidence of recent intrusion by rodents or fleas into the home, either through holes in the walls or by the family dog or cat.

Plague is a bacterial disease of rodents and is generally transmitted to humans through the bites of infected fleas, but can also be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, wildlife and pets.

?We are seeing plague activity in several different locations of north-central New Mexico,? said Dr. Paul Ettestad, public health veterinarian at the Department of Health. ?Everyone needs to be aware of the situation and take precautions to avoid rodents and their fleas.???

To prevent plague, the Department of Health also recommends:

? Keep your pets from roaming and hunting

? Clean up areas near the house where rodents could live, such as woodpiles, brush piles, junk and abandoned vehicles.

? Sick pets should be examined promptly by a veterinarian.

? See your doctor about any unexplained illness involving a sudden and severe fever.

? Put hay, wood, and compost piles as far as possible from your home.

? Don?t leave your pet?s food and water where mice can get to it.

Symptoms of plague in humans include sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, and weakness.

In most cases there is a painful swelling of the lymph node in the groin, armpit or neck areas.

Plague symptoms in cats and dogs are fever, lethargy and loss of appetite.

There may be a swelling in the lymph node under the jaw.

With prompt diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment, the fatality rate in people and pets can be greatly reduced.

Physicians who suspect plague should promptly report to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The first 2 human plague cases in New Mexico this year were in 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, both from Torrance County.

Both have recovered. There was one human plague case in New Mexico in 2012, two human cases of plague in 2011, no cases in 2010, and six human cases of plague in 2009, one of them fatal.

Motorola expanding into Waterloo, Ontario - BlackBerry's back yard

Motorola

Motorola moving into Canada's technology triangle

Motorola has announced that they will be opening a new office in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario — the home of BlackBerry. The site is a known hotbed of engineering, and other companies like Square, Intel and Electronic Arts also have a presence in Canada's Technology Triangle.

Motorola looks to open a new engineering office and tap into the area's pool of talent, which has been bolstered by the massive layoffs going on at BlackBerry. Motorola says they have been planning this move for a while, but for the folks with skills and no office to use them in, the timing couldn't be better.

Google already has a small office in Waterloo, and the current Motorola Kitchener-Waterloo office only employs a "handful" of people. They expect to soon begin hiring, and hopefully some great things can be done at the new facility.

BoE: no action now on housing, to focus on hedge fund rate risks

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's housing recovery does not require any action from regulators but will need to be watched closely, the Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee said on Wednesday.

The FPC, which has been tasked with spotting risks to the economy from the financial system, also singled out hedge funds for an examination of their vulnerability to rises in long-term interest rates.

The FPC said it made no new recommendations at its most recent meeting on September 18.

The watchdog said it was keeping a close eye on Britain's housing market which has picked up speed and raised some concerns from some external economists about the risks of a new bubble in property prices.

The FPC said the housing recovery "appeared to have gained momentum and to be broadening" but activity and loan-to-value ratios on new mortgages were below historic averages.

Debts costs were low and house prices compared with earnings were at their level of a decade ago.

"In view of that, the Committee judged that it should closely monitor developments in the housing market and banks' underwriting standards," it said in a statement after its Sept 18 meeting.

If any action was needed, it would be "proportionate to the risks and consistent with a graduated response."

House prices in Britain as a whole rose 3.3 percent in the 12 months to July but jumped nearly 10 percent in London, official data showed last week.

The housing recovery has been helped by government and Bank of England measures to free up mortgage lending. A new phase of the government's Help to Buy program is due to be launched in January.

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney and finance minister George Osborne have shown no concern about the prospect of a housing price bubble, pointing to levels of activity in the property market that are below their pre-crisis peak.

But earlier this month, a group representing British property surveyors called on the BoE to take measures to slow mortgage lending if house price growth exceeds 5 percent a year.

FOCUS ON HEDGE FUNDS

In June, the BoE ordered an investigation into the vulnerability of Britain's financial institutions and borrowers to higher interest rates when central banks around the world start to wean their economies off massive stimulus.

The FPC said in its statement on Wednesday that a moderate rise in long-term interest rates did not pose an immediate threat to major banks and insurance companies and so far "had not led to dislocations in market functioning or significant impact on financial institutions."

However, levels of leverage within hedge funds, which could make them vulnerable to a sharp rise in borrowing costs, "needed to be looked at more closely," the statement said.

The Empire President: Jeremy Scahill on Obama's "Neo-Con ...

We will ensure the free flow of energy from the region to the world. Although America is steadily reducing our own dependence on imported oil, the world still depends on the region?s energy supply, and a severe disruption could destabilize the entire global economy.

We will dismantle terrorist networks that threaten our people. Wherever possible, we will build the capacity of our partners, respect the sovereignty of nations, and work to address the root causes of terror. But when it?s necessary to defend the United States against terrorist attack, we will take direct action.

This leads me to a final point. There will be times when the breakdown of societies is so great, the violence against civilians so substantial that the international community will be called upon to act. This will require new thinking and some very tough choices. While the United Nations was designed to prevent wars between states, increasingly we face the challenge of preventing slaughter within states. And these challenges will grow more pronounced as we are confronted with states that are fragile or failing ? places where horrendous violence can put innocent men, women and children at risk, with no hope of protection from their national institutions.

I have made it clear that even when America?s core interests are not directly threatened, we stand ready to do our part to prevent mass atrocities and protect basic human rights. But we cannot and should not bear that burden alone. In Mali, we supported both the French intervention that successfully pushed back al Qaeda, and the African forces who are keeping the peace.

?Does Ontario Really Need a Local Food Act?? was the topic of a column in today?s Toronto Star by Prof. Brady Deaton and professor emeritus Karl Meilke, both of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics.

They question a proposed provincial law that would require public-sector organizations such as hospitals, schools and universities to use local foods, and suggest that additional costs will outweigh potential benefits.

Deaton studies land and property, and food and agricultural standards. He directs the Greenbelt Project studying the economic effects of Ontario?s recently enacted Greenbelt. A specialist in trade and domestic policy analysis, Meilke is a former recipient of the Ontario Agricultural College Distinguished Researcher award and a Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society.

In a CBC.ca story called ?Monarch Butterfly Numbers Drop to New Lows,? Prof. Ryan Norris discussed the need to understand the insect?s migration pattern to help conserve the species. The integrative biology professor predicts that, without major conservation work, butterfly numbers will continue a long-term decline.

Norris conducts behavioural and demographic field research, including landscape ecology, theoretical and empirical modeling, and biogeochemistry. His field research sites include Algonquin Park, the Pacific coast, Costa Rica, the Bay of Fundy and the University of Guelph campus.

The PMA, Our Field, Our Profession, Our Future. | BASI Pilates

by Carrie Smith

Recently, there was a Pilates facebook thread that did not stop; it went on and on and on? growing throughout the entire weekend. The main topic of the conversation was directed at attacking AND defending the existence of the PMA (Pilates Method Alliance).? The Executive Director of the PMA, Elizabeth Anderson, was involved in the conversation and did an excellent job ignoring some blatant attacks on the organization and defending with factual statements, not just opinion, the mission and purpose of the PMA. It definitely was a very lively discussion? (makes you wonder what Pilates Instructors do on their weekends!), and involved some less than professional attacks; however, I found it to be very valuable and filled with facts that I thought every Pilates Instructor should be aware of and even more importantly,? to involve themselves in the conversation over the direction of our profession. This topic, discussion and direction will affect us all (at least in the US).

First and foremost, the PMA?s primary purpose is ? to provide an international organization to connect teachers, teacher trainers, studios, and facilities dedicated to preserving and enhancing the legacy of Joseph H. Pilates and his exercise method by establishing standards, encouraging unity, and promoting professionalism? ?what?s not to like about that?? I hope we are all in agreement here, but if not, its okay to have another opinion; I would just like to hear why you disagree with that statement.

Our field has progressed so much in recent years that we desperately need an organization to help corral us together and foster unity and growth as professionals instead of the division that can occur when different ideologies collide. This facebook discussion revealed some attitudes that can be disastrous to any field trying to find its way to acceptance by the general public and other professional fields.

All professional, credible occupations have an organization to help unify its members and support the continued growth, education and dissemination of? necessary information to its members. The Pilates field absolutely needs such an organization and the PMA is the largest, most progressive Pilates organization to date that is working to provide these tools to not just its members, but the entire field of Pilates. Membership is voluntary? anyone can attend a PMA conference or become certified (if they meet eligibility requirements) through them? maybe that will change in the future, but for now they are the only organization providing a 3rd party certification examination, and on top of that, the PMA?s Pilates Certification Program is NCCA accredited.

Are we going to be true professionals and work to elevate Pilates or are we okay with online ?degrees? obtained over a weekend? Let me give you a true story to illustrate the problem? the president of IHRSA (trade association for fitness/health clubs) told an audience at an IDEA convention a few years back that he applied? AND received a personal trainer certificate for his dog? with the DOG?S picture on it!! Yes, that is a problem! A BIG problem!! Let?s not have the Pilates world follow this path!

We need to act like professionals and have accreditation for schools that offer teacher training, proper third party certification (offered through PMA), ?mandatory continuing education and possibly varying levels of professional status based on varying levels of education, experience and knowledge. Why should we treat this as something unusual?

Elizabeth Anderson did a very good job with her thorough explanations in all of these areas? all on a facebook thread! We need to continue the conversation, join together and bring on the status that comes with a viable profession. Something, from what I understand, Joseph Pilates was searching for with his ?Contrology?. It is up to all of us? what does our future hold for Pilates??

Self-Medicating? Consider Harm Reduction - Choose Help

A lot of the people I treat for depression, anxiety, and stress management tell me that they?re becoming concerned about their use of ?drugs, alcohol, pot, and cigarettes.? All of these are drugs and yet they?re distinct categorically in the mind of the user. They represent very different threats to the individual. It?s telling that the order in which they?re presented is consistently the order in which they do the most amount of damage in the least amount of time.

Assessing the Situation

When the subject of self-medication comes up, rather than give an opinion on whether someone may be developing a pattern of abuse or addiction; I encourage folks to do some self screening:

  • Do you tend to take things to extremes/have an addictive personality?
  • Are you depending on a substance to cope with stress and/or negative emotions?
  • Do you tend to make high risk choices while under the influence?
  • Do you have a family history of alcoholism or addiction?

The next issue to consider is willingness. For those who are unwilling to explore life without substances, I advocate minimizing potential harm. In simple terms, what are we willing to do to reduce risk?

Understanding Harm Reduction

Harm reduction can be conceptualized as removing vices in the order in which they make life most unmanageable.

Self medicating is based in the belief/experience that dealing with life without substances and established forms of coping (no matter how unhealthy) is either undesirable or impossible.

The intersections of harm reduction and self medicating have not been meaningfully explored as combined approaches.

Self Medication - Addiction and Other Risks

We?re still ignoring the progression of self medication, experimentation, and substances that carry high risks when abused:

?Soda pop and Ritalin?
alcohol and cigarettes
and mary jane to keep me insane,
doing someone else?s cocaine.?

- Green Day ?Jesus of Suburbia?

Taking Stock of What We Use & Why

If we want to lower our risks, we must recognize that morality and legalities do not belong in the criteria of what?s safe (body and mind) and what isn?t. Alcohol is completely legal for those over 21 and it not only kills people every day, it?s also amongst our most abused and addictive substance.

If we?re going to make changes to our drug use, we need to stop using categorical approaches like ?meds?, ?drugs?, ?drinking? or ?smoking.? These distinctions are arbitrary and make it far easier to rationalize why it?s okay to continue using them. Look at each of the substances as what they are ? chemically mood altering substances.

Be brutally honest:

Pros:

  • What?s the overall effect of the drug?
  • What do I enjoy most about using it?
  • What do I gain from the use?

Cons/Risks:

  • Is the substance addictive?
  • What are the possible drug interactions and side effects?
  • How is impulsivity, decision making and regulation of emotion and behavior affected?
  • Does the drug have the potential to kill (overdose, poisoning)

Self Medicating without Substances

Instead of simply considering what to eliminate or reduce (which leads to a feeling of denying ourselves) we can also consider what to add. Seeking outlets for stress and negative emotion can be combined with activities and pursuits we enjoy. If we want a safe chemical to use; we?re free to try adrenaline. Skydiving is comparable to stimulant use at about the same cost and with far fewer (statistical) risks.

Choosing the Lesser of Evils

When we are completely honest with ourselves, we know that using any mood altering substance involves ingesting toxins and compromising our health. Measuring the pros and cons gives us a clear view of what we?re seeking and how it can be attained with the least amount of harm. In the grand scheme of things, nicotine, caffeine, and marijuana are as close as we can come to safety without abstinence.

Marijuana?

I?m old school in terms of recovery from addiction. There is one glaring example to my abstinence only advocacy: I see marijuana as a comparatively safe substance to use for managing ADHD, anxiety disorders (especially PTSD), sleep disturbances, nausea, and for managing chronic pain.

I also recognize that for some folks, abstinence is not a choice that they?re willing to make. In these cases, while I don?t recommend using cannabis, I see that it is far less dangerous than using alcohol or other drugs (including most of the medications prescribed for these conditions).

Risks of Marijuana

The real challenge in using marijuana is that once we?ve medicated or used recreationally, the temptation becomes stronger for some to then ingest another substance to heighten the experience. This dynamic is far more common with alcohol due to the impact on our inhibitions. The best approach is to make these decisions before using pot and resisting any temptations that may arise afterwards.

Self Medication: My Story

I can?t tolerate hypocrisy in myself. I?m addicted to caffeine and nicotine.

I don?t defend the ways in which I abuse my health with these substances. I use them to cope and to push my limits and I do so very consciously. This is how I self medicate. I choose these substances in the full light of day and this is the limit of my harm reduction. I choose not to use alcohol or other drugs in recognition of the likelihood that I would become addicted to these as well.

Building a Satisfying Life

The greatest opportunity is to invest in not only the emotional health we want, but in our lives holistically. We all know that drugs simply offer instant gratification. The challenge is to consider what would be far more gratifying in the long term. To work toward these ends is the most important piece of achieving emotional maturity and ultimately toward having the life we most want.

When Toronto police Staff Sgt. Chris Boddy saw a plush stuffed animal abandoned on the floor at Toronto Pearson International Airport, he immediately thought of his kids.

?Having kids myself, and being a kid once, you know how important these little things can be,? Boddy said, describing how he found the toy in the arrivals area last month while welcoming home officers who had been on a peacekeeping mission to Haiti.

?I assumed it was important to this little kid if they were going to take it away on a family trip,? he said. ?I just assumed that in the rush to leave the airport, put the bags in the cars, it was left behind.

So Boddy, who garnered Twitter fame earlier this month after TV-personality Katie Couric retweeted one of his posts about loneliness in schools, decided to use social media to find the toy?s owner.

He posed the stuffed animal in a luggage cart, snapped a picture and then published the image via Twitter and Facebook. Boddy then gave the plushy to the airport?s lost and found.

The picture ?was retweeted about 250 times and shared on Facebook nearly 370 times,? said Boddy, who used the hashtag #findmyowner.

The very next day, Boddy said, he received a Facebook message from a friend who had found the owner: a little boy named Caeden, 5.

Caeden?s father had been chatting with Boddy?s friend at a party the night before, and mentioned his son was sad after losing his stuffed dog, Hardy.

Boddy?s friend immediately showed Caeden?s father the #findmyowner campaign.

?They contacted the airport, which (shipped Hardy) to them,? Boddy said. ?I am glad the boy has his dog back using social media ? it?s a powerful tool.?

Caeden?s mom, Alisha, later reached out to Boddy through email.

?Although it may be difficult for Caeden to fully understand how truly lucky we are to have Hardy back, as he doesn?t understand the enormity of the Toronto airport, nor does he understand that some people might not actually care enough to bring him to the lost and found. (But) we will never forget your kindness and will be sure to remind Caeden of the story often so that one day he will fully understand and appreciate your kind act!? she wrote.

Hardy was apparently named after a real golden retriever, and, besides his BoundHomewardBound experience, has rarely left Caeden?s side since he was received as a gift three years ago.

You've Been Warned: Why You Need to Be Ready for Total Grid ...

Daisy Luther
The Organic Prepper

Are you ready for total grid failure

If you haven?t been in a bubble cut off from all forms of media lately, it would be impossible to have missed all of the warnings being issued about the impending loss of our electrical grid.

This isn?t just coming from so-called ?gloom and doom? sites or from alternative media. Major mainstream media sources such as ABC News, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and CBS News have all issued the alerts. Unfortunately, the hordes seem to be brushing these warnings off as something that cannot happen, because the reality is too unpleasant to even contemplate. Many seem to think that they are far better to stick their heads in the sand and be assured it can never happen than to prepare ahead of time.

Who Is Ringing the Warning Bell?

In case you?ve missed it, here are some of the warnings over the past few months that most people are ignoring.

When Janet Napolitano stepped down from her role as head of the DHS she released an open letter to her successor. One chilling tidbit she passed on was this.

The outgoing Homeland Security Secretary has a warning for her successor: A massive and ?serious? cyber attack on the U.S. homeland is coming, and a natural disaster ? the likes of which the nation has never seen ? is also likely on its way. (source)

Read more on Napolitano?s warning?HERE.

But there?s more. Big Sis isn?t the only one warning us about the possibility of a grid-down scenario.

Former North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan has?co-authored a book about the topic?with?David Hagberg ? his novel Gridlock is a fictional account of a very real threat.

?Our power system is very vulnerable. You could see a shutdown by hackers in cyber terror. You could see it shutdown for days, weeks or months, crippling this country and causing enormous havoc.? (source)

Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) also actively agrees with the threat assessment. He released a report last May that said our power infrastructure was ?highly vulnerable to attacks from Iran and North Korea? and as well as to natural threats such as geomagnetic storms from solar activity.

?With one well-placed keystroke, Americans could be plunged into darkness and chaos through the damage to our electric grid. Foreign enemies are employing Web warriors to attack our way of life, and it?s time that our actions respond to the potential threat.? (source)

Other people in the know have attempted to make the public aware of the potential for apocalyptic disaster, but few seem to be taking them seriously.

We are only one act of madness away from a social cataclysm unlike anything our country has ever known.
-Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ), Senior Member House Armed Service Committee

EMP is one of the small number of threats that could hold at risk the continued existence of U.S. civil society.
-Dr. Robert Hermann, Commissioner US Congress EMP Commission

Just one violent active region on the sun can cause continent-wide, perhaps even planetary-scale impacts to our critical infrastructure.
-John Kappenman, Principal Investigator US Congress EMP Commission

The Likelihood of a severe?geo-magnetic?event capable of crippling our electric grid is 100%.
-Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Senior Member House Homeland Security Committee

(source)

Former Congressman?Roscoe Bartlett has been preaching?the dangers of EMP, whether deliberate or natural, for many years:

We could have events in the future where the power grid will go down and it?s not, in any reasonable time, coming back up. For instance, if when the power grid went down some of our large transformers were destroyed, damaged beyond use, we don?t make any of those in this country. They?re made overseas?and you order one and 18 months to two years later they will deliver it. Our power grid is very vulnerable. It?s very much on edge. Our military knows that.

There are a number of events that could create a situation in the cities where civil unrest would be a very high probability.

I think that those who can, and those who understand, need to take advantage of the opportunity when these winds of strife are not blowing to move their families out of the city.?(source)

Don?t forget the veiled warnings implicit in predictive programming entertainment. One of last year?s biggest television hits?was?the show ?Revolution?, which portrayed life 15 years after a deliberate takedown of the power grid.

GridEx Drill in November

And finally, if all of these warnings aren?t enough to alert your Spidey senses, here is one that is undeniable.

The United States, Mexico, and Canada intend to participate in a drill in November that will simulate the takedown of the grid.

An electrical grid joint drill simulation is being planned in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Thousands of utility workers, FBI agents, anti-terrorism experts, governmental agencies, and more than 150 private businesses are involved in the November?power grid drill.

The downed?power grid?simulation will reportedly focus on both physical and cyber attacks. The antiquated electrical system in the United States has been one of the most neglected pieces of integral infrastructure.

The disaster drill is being described as a crisis practice unlike anything the real power grid has ever experienced. The?GridEX II?drill Nov. 13-14 will focus primarily on how governments will react if the electrical grid fails and, for instance, the food supply chain collapses.

American utility companies are responsible for running approximately 5,800 power plants and about 450,000 high-voltage transmission lines, controlled by various devices which have been put into place over the past decades. Some of the utility companies which oversee the power grid reportedly use ?antique computer protocols? which are ?probably? safe from cyber hackers,? The New York Times reported.

?If an adversary lands a knockout blow, [experts] fear, it could black out vast areas of the continent for weeks; interrupt supplies of water, gasoline, diesel fuel and fresh food; shut down communications; and create disruptions of a scale that was only hinted at by Hurricane Sandy and the attacks of Sept. 11,? The Times said.

If the power grid fails, a lack of electricity and food delivery are only the first wave of troubles facing the American people. Police could face major problems with civil unrest. Of course, there also would not be any electric heating or cooling, which easily could lead to many deaths depending on the season. (source)

The most alarming thing about this drill is the trend of suspected false flag events in America that have corresponded with ?drills?. Whether or not this will coincide in a real take-down of the grid remains to be seen, but one only needs to think back to events such as the Boston Marathon Bombing, the 9/11 attacks, and the Oklahoma City Bombing to see that there is a possibility that when ?drills? occur, often the players are simply being moved into place right under the nose of the public.

What Can You Do to Be Ready?

It doesn?t honestly matter HOW the grid goes down. Whether it is an enemy attack, as in the novel? One Second After, a government false flag in order to institute martial law, or a natural act that is the result of a solar flare, a long-term grid collapse will result in an extremely high death toll.

If you are already of the preparedness mindset, you?ll fare better than the average North American. However, many people have never contemplated the following questions:

  • How will you get food if the grocery stores are closed?
  • How will you cook food if you are able to acquire it?
  • What will happen to the perishable food in your refrigerator and freezer?
  • How will you heat and cool your home if you are in an area subject to extreme temperatures?
  • What will you use for light once the scented candle that sits on your coffee table is gone?
  • How will you transport yourself if a) your vehicle doesn?t run because the computers are fried or b) it runs but you can?t get gas because the pumps at the station run on electricity?
  • What will you drink and wash with if the municipal water facilities are no longer providing water or if the pump on your well runs on electricity?

Find as many solutions as possible for the issues you would face if?going for weeks (or longer) without power. You must stay warm, eat, and drink. Everything else is a bonus. You can live without?the television, the video game console, the microwave in the kitchen, and the laptop.

Some people like to give arguments as to why they can?t resolve these issues. They live in an apartment, they rent, they have a limited budget?.the list is as long as indefinite detention. The fact is, by realizing these things are necessary and refusing to face them and find solutions for your particular situation, you are setting your family up to suffer, and possibly even die, when it could be avoided.

A recent article encouraged readers who were new to prepping to start out by?getting ready for a two week power outage. Apply the following ?information to create your own preparedness plan for the grid failure that is sure to come.?Modify the suggestions to adapt them to your particular home, family, and climate.

Water

Everyone knows that clean drinking water is something you can?t live without. In the event of a disaster, the water may not run from the taps, and if it does, it might not be safe to drink, depending on the situation. If there is a boil order in place, remember that if the power is out, boiling your water may not be as easy as turning on your stove.

Each family should store a two week supply of water. The rule of thumb for drinking water is 1 gallon per day, per person. Don?t forget to stock water for your pets, also.

You can create your water supply very inexpensively. Many people use clean 2 liter soda pop bottles to store tap water. Others purchase the large 5 gallon jugs of filtered water from the grocery store. Consider a gravity fed water filtration device and water purification tablets as well.

Food and a Way to Prepare It

There are two schools of thought regarding food during a power outage. One: you need a cooking method that does not require the grid to be functioning. Two: you can store food that doesn?t require cooking.

If you opt for a secondary cooking method, be sure that you have enough fuel for two weeks. Store foods that do not require long cooking times ? for example, dried beans would use a great deal of fuel, but canned beans could be warmed up, or even eaten cold.

Heat (Depending on Your Climate)

If your power outage takes place in the winter and you live in a colder climate, heat is another necessity. During the first 24 hours after a power outage, you can stay fairly warm if you block off one room of the house for everyone to group together in. Keep the door closed and keep a towel or blanket folded along the bottom of the door to conserve warmth. You can safely burn a couple of candles also, and in the enclosed space, your body heat will keep it relatively warm. As well, dress in layers and keep everything covered ? wear a hat, gloves (fingerless ones allow you to still function), and a scarf.

However, after about 48 hours, that?s not going to be enough in very cold weather. You will require back-up heat at this point in certain climates. If you are lucky enough to have a source of heat like a fireplace or woodstove, you?ll be just fine as long as you have a supply of wood.

Consider a portable propane heater (and propane) or an oil heater. You have to be very careful what type of backup heat you plan on using, as many of them can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if used in a poorly ventilated area.

Sanitation Needs

A common cause of illness, and even death, during a down-grid situation is lack of sanitation. We?ve discussed the importance of clean drinking water, but you won?t want to use your drinking water to keep things clean or to flush the toilet.

For cleaning, reduce your need to wash things. Stock up on paper plates, paper towels, and disposable cups and flatware. Keep some disinfecting cleaning wipes and sprays (I don?t recommend using antibacterial products on a regular basis, however in the event of an emergency they can help to keep you healthy.) Use hand sanitizer after using the bathroom and before handing food or beverages ? there may be a lot more germs afoot in a disaster.

Look at your options for sanitation. Does your toilet still flush when the electricity is out? Many people discovered the hard way that the toilets didn?t work when the sewage backed up in the highrises in New York City in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. At our cabin, the toilet won?t flush without power because the pump is electric.

If you are on a septic system, with no risk of the toilet backing up into the house, simply store some water for flushing in the bathroom. (At the first sign of a storm, we always fill the bathtub for this purpose.) Add the water to the tank so that you can flush.

If this is not an option, another solution is to stock up on extremely heavy duty garbage bags (like the kind that contractors use at construction sites) and kitty litter. Place a bag either in your drained toilet or in a bucket. Sprinkle some kitty litter in the bottom of the bag. Each time someone uses the bathroom, add another handful of litter. Be very careful that the bag doesn?t get too heavy for you to handle it. Tie it up very securely and store it outside until services are restored.

Light

Lighting is absolutely vital, especially if there are children in the house. Nothing is more frightening than being completely in the dark during a stressful situation. Fortunately, it?s one of the easiest things to plan for, as well as one of the least expensive.

Some lighting solutions are:

  • Garden stake solar lights
  • Candles
  • Kerosene lamps
  • Flashlights (don?t forget batteries)
  • Hand crank camping lantern
  • Don?t forget matches or lighters

Tools and Supplies

Some basic items will make your life much easier during an emergency. Here are some things that are essential in the event of a power outage:

  • Lighter/waterproof matches
  • Batteries in various sizes
  • Manual can opener
  • Basic tools:?Pliers, screwdriver, wrench, hammer
  • Duct tape
  • Crazy glue
  • Sewing supplies
  • Bungee cords

If you?d like to expand on the basic supplies, a more detailed list of tools and hardware can be found?HERE.

First Aid Kit

It?s important to have a basic first aid kit on hand at all times, but particularly in the event of an emergency. Your kit should include basic wound care items like bandages, antibiotic ointments, and sprays. As well, if you use them, keep on hand a supply of basic over-the-counter medications, like pain relief capsules, cold medicine, cough syrup, anti-nausea pills, and allergy medication. Particularly important if sanitation is a problem are anti-diarheal medications.

If you want to put together a more advanced medical kit, you can find a list?HERE.

Special Needs

This is something that will be unique to every family. Consider the things that are needed on a daily basis in your household. It might be prescription medications, diapers, or special foods. If you have pets, you?ll need supplies for them too. The best way to figure out what you need is to jot things down as you use them over the course of a week or so.

Get Started Today

You can start right now ? this very minute ? all you have to do is grab a pad of paper and a pen.

  1. Begin by personalizing the suggestions above to fit your family?s needs and make a list of your requirements.
  2. Next, do a quick inventory ? as I mentioned above, you may be surprised to see that you already have quite a few of the supplies that are recommended.
  3. Make a shopping list and acquire the rest of the items you need. If you can?t afford everything right now, prioritize the most important things first.
  4. Organize your supplies so that they are easily accessible when you need them. It?s hard to find seldom-used items in the dark.

When the lights go out, don?t be left to the not-so-tender mercies of those who would place themselves in charge. Maintain your independence by strengthening the position of your family. Take steps towards preparedness and self-sufficiency so ?that you won?t need the government?s assistance to weather the storm.

If you must comply to survive, your freedom is just an illusion. You?ve been warned ? what you do with the information is up to you.
