His Giants are 0-2, and his quarterback is struggling. But this week, there may be far more on coach Tom Coughlin?s mind than a mere football game.
On Monday night, Coughlin?s younger brother John Coughlin passed away at age 63. A native of Waterloo, he?d spent the past 20 years in New Jersey, working as a horse trainer out of Coughlin?s Stables in East Rutherford.
Coughlin spent much of Monday with his brother at the Hackensack Medical Center. He worked with the team through morning meetings, then left shortly thereafter, canceling his routine Monday press conference to return to Hackensack Medical. John Coughlin passed away on later that night.
The coach still returned to the team on Wednesday, though, and he plans to stay with the team this week and coach on Sunday against the Panthers in Carolina. He was his usual fiery self during his Wednesday press conference as well, but he is also coaching with a heavy heart.
?John was a friend to all,? the coach said in a statement. ?He loved life, and he will be greatly missed. He left us way too soon.?
Family and friends are invited to call at the Doran Funeral Home, 4 E. Bayard St., Seneca Falls, on Monday from 4-7 p.m.?Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary?s Church in Waterloo. The family has asked that, if anyone desires, contributions be made to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, P.O. Box 50798, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. 32240.
Coughlin also thanked everyone for their ?sympathy and prayers.?
?Our family is thankful for the expressions of sympathy and prayers for our brother John?s passing,? he said. ?We appreciate them.?
